Comment:
This mix covers a lot of ground, but the loose thematic progression is summer into winter into darkness into light. Weird/obscure/nonalbum tracks include:#2, an iTunes only single by Beck that blends a very nice fat beat with some excellent sha na nas, and thus segues nicely into "Jackie Wilson Said";
#5, a Sun Studios rarity collected on an eMusic-only (as far as I can tell) compilation, in which the harmonies are like the Delmore Brothers or perhaps the Collins Kids, but the lyric is like Medea;
#12, not rare but a pivotal track in the mix which shifts things forcibly downtempo, followed by the equally cheery #s 13 and 14;
another abrupt shift with #15, Kirsty Maccoll's first hit, a Billy Bragg cover;
#18, an unreleased collaboration between Jeff Buckley and Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins--the song exists in one other radio bootleg in which Jeff performs it solo and both renditions are spinetingling--if only the song had survived their relationship to get a proper studio recording!--and finally...
#20, which in my mix is the version I took off my vinyl copy of Music from the Knee Plays because I started making this mix before the record was issued for the first time on CD late this fall.
Feedback:
This looks phenomenal! Liking the Black Angels, Big Star, and Howlin' Wolf especially.
ooowheee. Can't wait.
All Flowers in time is probably my favorite song ever. And any mix with Big Star and the Beatles is absolutely epic. Great mix.
Oh, I absolutely approve. I like the idea of a SAD-inspired track progression, too. Can't wait to hear it.
the latter half of this one has hooked me. and the Buckley/Fraser song is news to me. must be amazing !
