Comment:

This is a mix that's dedicated to that glorious 1% of AOTM who comment on mixes, share the love, and help make this a real community.

1%? Really?

Yep, that's right. Tracking the downloads on my mixes, it's been a pretty consistent 1% of downloaders that actually take the time to say something nice, or to engage in conversation. The other 99% of freeloading loser twits can just kiss my Bloody Mother F---ing A--hole, because it's the vocal minority that make this place worth visiting. So cheers to all of you: Have a nice double-download of blues, indie, hip-hop and oddball shit.

I'm of two minds about the commenting biz. On the one hand, I always appreciate comments, even if nothing more than a brief "nice," and thus try to leave my share for others. On the other hand, while I look at a lot of mixes (at least those from reliable mixers), I can't say I always leave a comment, because how many times can you say "er, I suppose this is good, but I've never heard any of the songs except for that one Beatles tune which I like so I'm betting the rest is good, too"?
Incidentally, I've never heard most of these songs, except a few obvious ones (Folk Implosion, English Beat), but I'm sure the mix is really good...

well, I do comment when I feel that I can add something original/witty/informative/sarcastic . . . . sometimes, I am with Pop Kulcher . . . . .I feel compelled to say something else now, so . . . .loads that I don't know . . . loads that I probably should know, but don't (eg the Ron Sexsmith pick) . . . . one or two guilty pleasures (eg Queen and the Tull) . . . and love the 'belters' that I know (eg Alabama 3) . . . Good stuff . . . (did I pass ?)

Pardon me, Gabe, I've looked at a few of your mixes, at least enough to know that you've got some serious issues going on (low self esteem, etc), and appear to be the type who lets it all hang out in public (another symptom). You seem to use AotM as your primary social venue, letting us all know your innermost thoughts. Your previous porn mix made me think, "What pervert would actually spend time listening to that shite, much less compiling it?" and
"When they DO listen, is it in an old raincoat, with a tattered copy of Playboy at the ready?".

But to respond with "Kiss my arse if you don't comment" really takes the cake and, IMO, shows YOU to be what you describe your non-commenting listener-ship to be (and makes one wonder what caused dearest Maddie to move on -- hmmm...could it have been your charming personality? Get a life, Gabe, old chap...life's about infinitely more than the number of comments you glean from one of your "masterpieces".
See...you've just increased your comment count by one.

I appreciate the mix and the sentiment and with all due respect Gene, you've got this one wrong. This is a community and maybe it's because I've talked at length with Gabe that I get the context, and I get him. I'm not provoking a slanging match man, I love opinions good and bad but I thought your tone was unnecessary. I'm a bit surprised, and disappointed to be honest but I hand on heart respect the fact that you were passionate enough to say it.

post data : If someone feels at home enough to share their "issues" then I welcome it and re-reading your comment... you got personal, and it's your issues hanging out to dry. There I said it.

Say what you please, Barry. This site is more 'club' than 'community'. I will agree that I'm the odd man out, a fact for which I'm grateful. I guess each side thinks the 'issues' lie across the fence; and that's nothing new.

About the theme: Pop Kulcher has it right, at least on my part. Most of the time I haven't heard what's on a mix, or I dislike it, or there's some other reason I don't really have much to say about it. Although a download helps overcome that problem, sometimes there still isn't anything to comment on.

About the mix: I've heard maybe four songs on this, and I like those four songs. That is the extent of my ability to comment. See above.

I suppose this is good, but I've never heard any of the songs except for that one [English Beat] tune which I like so I'm betting the rest is good, too! ;)Just kiddin' this looks stellar. I know a lot of this and am looking forward to seeing how you pieced it all together. Now, as for club vs. community...I guess I really don't care enough to comment, anymore. Well...okay, a few thoughts, if I may. I am of the quality over quantity mind when it comes to commentary. But, having said that, is it really that hard to comment on a mix if you've gone through the effort to download? And, a quick query, since when does an MoTW winner garner so little feedback? Hmmm.Arrghh, you know what, I'm going back to my initial stance, which is to state, I really don't give a [blank].But, I must admit, I do love the tension. I'm going to make some popcorn and watch the obvious sides align and watch this hilarity play out.

blasikin, over 200 people downloaded each disc of the MotW I was honored with. I think there's a lot of "drive-by downloaders" that don't even belong to the site, which is who this was ultimately aimed at. :)

At the risk of being verbally assassinated, I have downloaded a few times and not commented because I'm still learning about all these groups I didn't even know existed. As far as commenting on them, as a somewhat-newbie, I didn't even think you cared about my opinion. Thanks for the downloads, though, next time I'll add a comment--I promise! Yikes! Here come the bullets...

"200 people downloaded" a two disc mix and you don't find that flattering!? Huh, that's a pretty bold statement if there ever was one. Or, dare I say, comment.

Ah, the silent majority. Tongue in cheek or no, it's good that you note this. At the very least, folks could say "Hey man, thanks," even if they don't have anything witty to say/That said, I think there's a certain pressure to make "cool" comments, or at least ones that show you know & have an opinion on the music. So it can be a little intimidating sometimes, because you want to say something at least as insightful as, "Wow, I never would have considered segue-ing from Dean Martin into the Butthole Surfers, but on listening, it really works," and how often can you say that? Especially about mixes that feature neither Dean Martin nor the Butthole Surfers?

I'm "safe" in that regard (chouinard-regard?).

I don't know anybody on here considering I just joined a month ago. I've been so busy looking through mixes that I haven't commented that much.... but looking back, I did see I commented on one of your mixes Gabe. So I hope you don't mind that I download this mix. Keep 'em coming, please. This is my new hobby and I'm trying to catch up.
I like comments too.
Thanks.

Fuckin' A, I'm gonna get one of those 1% er patches that all the outlaw bikers wear. Seriously, I get pretty excited about all the downloads I get, the comments and encouragement are great, but I love seeing those download #'s rise. However, I'm the guy who leaves mixed cd's all over town for anybody to pick up, it's pretty fun, I put my email address and such on them and once in a while you hear back. But it's just great to know you've let some great music out of your collection and into the world for someone.

Since Gabe and Gene are cool, I feel comfortable about commenting. Chris likes the tension, I like peace, love and understanding. If you download a mix, good manners dictate leaving a comment such as thank you for the link. The rest is up to you. Sometimes I leave a comment because I like a track. Sometimes I like a track and don't leave a comment. I rarely download mixes because I have so much stuff I find by myself that I can't keep up with it all. I do download Gene's mixes because he does things that I would not come across otherwise. Comments are always appreciated-even the negative ones. There is nothing like the experience of being told a mix of yours is f*cked.

I know exactly 2 tunes here (Tull & Cash)...making it about 3% to 4% of the total AND this is my 4th comment, so I'm way ahead of the odds (and I haven't even downloaded it yet!).

one thing to consider. i often download mixes, with or without commenting, with the intent of listening and leaving or updating a comment. i am now sitting on twenty plus mixes that i have yet to get around to listening to. when i get some time i'll orgy but this isn't the best way to give full attention to each mix. you can chose to look at non commenting downloaders as freeloading jerks or you can chose to give people the benefit of the doubt. this comment isn't directed solely at tongue in cheek gabe but at the whole community. (i guess i just took a side in the club vs community debate.) practice peace.

Dig the mix. Very eclectic. Beck->English Beat looks groovy. As for the Great Comments Shitstorm, sometimes life gets in the way of spending as much time as one would like to on AOTM. There's lots of folks around here (Mark Petrucelli, popkulcher, hemizen, sammy, Barrydali and g.a.b. labs, just off the top of my head), who put out consistently GREAT mixes that I don't often catch on the boards to comment on. All I know, is that once I quit worrying about how many comments I got on mixes and just enjoyed making them and giving them out to my friends and appreciating the fact that there's people out there who enjoy them...well, mister, that's all I need. :-) Oh yeah, links are always appreciated. Gracias.

Why does all this stuff always seem to happen when I go away for a weekend???? All I can say about this mix is that what very little I do know, I like, and, quite honestly (as with most mixes I comment on) I probably won't download it because, realistically, I don't have the time to listen to most of the mixes posted with links.

For the record I haven't downloaded or commented on any of your mixes thus far. But I agree with Shawn and Chris...minus the part about the English Beat & Beck... downloads are flattering regardless of comments. My last mix got 1073 downloads but not nearly the number of comments you've received, and I was just thrilled that anyone wanted to listen to it other than my uncle Igor. Any comments are just a lovely little bonus. (Your cover art is hilarious, by the way)

It seems the primary reason we post mixes and leave download links is to share our creations with other musically-inclined folks (nuts!). Even though I haven't yet figured out how to check for the number of times my mixes were downloaded, it is nice to know someone is interested. Kind of keeps the enthusiasm flowing.
Comments are the only other way to see if anyone else is looking if not listening.

That said, getting around to all the mixes available here is a daunting task. I wish I had the time to do just that, and listen to them all as well.

The comments I'm intrigued by are the ones that tell you the mix is pretty good but I hate that one song. Oh, well. I didn't or I wouldn't have put it on there. Nevertheless, if someone takes the time to write, even if it's critical, that's okay. It's just an opinion.

Bloody hell I nearly missed this one. Wish I knew how to provide links to my mixes but I don't but I'm always happy to send a 'real' copy to those interested. For my part, living in the depths of France I always get a kick when the postman drops off another trade. Personally I couldn't give a rat's arse if I get comments or not, my mixes are generally locked into either psychedelia or power-pop and I appreciate that ain't everyone's bag. I mix for my own pleasure not for others. Where was I/ Oh yeh your mix I know exactly 33% of this and like what I know as for the rest who knows but I reckon it will be decent. Peace everyone, practice peace as Mahdishain says!

Holy shit, Gabe, was that enough ego-stroking for you? Crap, I just have to say that I agree with every single comment here, good to bad, negative, nut-licking to otherwise, including your own. As always, I love the greasier aspect of the mix (and the comments), CTK, Otis Spann, Johnny, but I am biased strongly against Tull and Iron & Wine is good for naptime. I think that is what their name comes from, being hit in the head with a big chunk of iron and then drinking a glass of wine for the concussion.Nah, they're not that bad, but the Wad has made me terribly suspicious of pizza hippie music, though I really made a conscious effort to seek some of that shit out on my latest mix. And of course during my penance, I was downloading left and right and commenting zero. But everybody's right here and I'm not just being a moral relativist. This whole fucking' rainbow of opinions really work.Oh yeah, and I was very skeptical of the 200 downloads till I just saw it for my own eyes (you can tell a German, but you can't tell him much or proud member of the show-me-state or something like that). And if this is a club, I might have to leave. I don't know if I could handle being part of a club that would have someone like me as a member. Happy Easter...
