Comment:

From the moment I laid eyes on [identity-protected], I was in love with her.

If you're truly given only three great loves in your life, she was at least two of them, even though I never told her. Not that it mattered - she knew all along. You can't hid that kind of devotion.

How long were we friends? Most of my adult life, I guess. It was one of those enduring friendships, where a year could pass without seeing each other, but five minutes into the reunion it's like you've never been apart. And oh, the adventures we had! Drinking margaritas until four AM and then going to work together at seven. The concerts, the skinny-dipping in the river, the simple companionship of taking a long walk. It was, to say the least, a complicated friendship, always skirting the rim of something more. [identity-protected] was first and foremost my best friend, but she thought (wrongly) that I was 'too good for her', even if she loved me too. It was the longing of a bad sitcom: Will they or won't they?

Then one day, she up and left town.

She said she needed a break, and she thought Chicago would clear her head. Her letter said she was thinking of going back to school. She was making plans, correcting her life.

She went into stripping to earn money for school. I don't know when the drugs came in, or the heavy hard drinking. Later letters hinted at the prostitution, though she never came out and said it outright. For three aching years I worried about her. Until her sister broke the news - [identity-protected] was dead. A murder/suicide in a piece of shit fleabag motel on the south side of Chicago.

For a long time I couldn't imagine it. How had [identity-protected] gone from the vibration of life I knew to this miserable, strung-out girl on the edge of sanity? How did she wind up in a seedy mot[el room with a gun and only two bullets?

This mix is about coming to terms with it. The first side is told from my point of view. The second side is told from primarily from hers. And it's called Just Two Bullets - A Seedy Motel Mix.

NOTE: I've sworn to myself over and over that I would *never* use "Mad World" on a mix, because it always makes me think of [identity-protected]. Guess this lets me break the rule. And her name was not Mary.

Let us praise Gabe. O Gabe...
...Ooh, You are so big...
...So absolutely huge.
Gosh, we're all really impressed down here, I can tell You.
Forgive us, O Gabe, for this, our dreadful toadying, and...
and barefaced flattery.
But You are so strong and, well, just so super.
Fantastic.
Amen.

I loved 'Mad World' when I first heard it at the end of Donnie Darko, but then it was all over the radio for months...Great concept, great mix, will listen to the whole thing tomorrow.

Jesus Christ, this is good. And sad. And exactly what Curtis said. Wow. That's some story and it sounds like exactly the kind of dysfunctional relationship that would have reeled me in at one time.

Sorry for the lack of downloads yet - I'm sitting on the front steps stealing wi-fi (which Doowad assures me is a great mix title), so trying to upload is a futile gesture at this point. Soon, I promise! Just have to scrounge $1.32 so I can buy a coffee at the coffee shop. (And yes, I literally have to *scrounge* for that much. Don't ask; being a writer is not lucrative.)

Thanks all for the great comments. Cheers! I appreciate it.

What a terrific tale! It reminds me of a short story I once read by Jack Pendarvis, a great southern writer. And this is a great mix.

Wow. That is some back story. Both moving and harrowing. I would love to download these, not just because the likes of M. Ward and Tom Waits always arouse my interest, but because the story has drawn me in. I am also a penniless writer using 'free' wi-fi signals and living off tinned soup. So I take my hat off to you!

Okay, now for the actual comment:I love this. It's surprising, again, how often you post mixes full of stuff I'm listening to, and vice versa. Pretty much all of side one is in heavy rotation over here.Side two features tons of tunes I've never heard by artists I already love--par for the course when it comes to your mixes. As always, this is beautiful. Hope for the dl soon!<3 Sara

Excellent mix....My blood pressure sky rocketed, right up until the point where one plus one on my side became one plus two on yours. I kept thinking...No. Oh, HELL no, please... and then...Not the same girl at all."My" little hummingbird may still be out there somewhere, but I'll never know. Is it better to have the loss of knowing, or the loss of never knowing?
