Comment:
This is an autobiographical mix I compiled for my 41st birthday (41 tracks!). I was a relative latecomer to rock music because my family had pretty odd tastes and rock was not really heard much in my household. The songs on these two discs are roughly arranged in the order in which I became aware of them. Tracks 1-20 are from Junior High/High School and tracks 21-41 are from the early college years.Track 1: Friend's Brother's record collection. He had all the Cars albums.
Track 2: First saw Blondie perform on Solid Gold.
Tracks 3-9: MTV opens up a whole new world of music.
Tracks 10-12 and 15-17: Songs I discovered by taping my friends' record collections.
Tracks 13, 14 and 19: 13 is from the first rock recording I ever bought, 14 from the first vinyl album (Still Rock and Roll To Me by Billy Joel was the first 45), and track 19 is from the first rock album I ever owned (a gift from my sister).
Tracks 18 and 20: Before moving back to California, I asked friends to add a song to a cassette mix I was compiling. These songs were two that really stood out.
Track 21: Upon returning to California, reconnected with a childhood friend who turned me on to Eno and other art rock/progressive artists.
Tracks 22-27: The golden age of college radio.
Track 28: My childhood Monkee Mania re-emerges.
Track 29: I start buying volumes of the Rhino Nuggets series. This is from vol. 4, "Pop Part 2".
Track 30: I finally get into the Beatles. This song goes into heavy rotation after a breakup with a fellow Beatles fan.
Track 31: It was right behind the Beatles at the record store, it looked good, I'm glad I bought it.
Tracks 32-36: I take "The History of Rock 'n' Roll of the Sixties" and life is never quite the same again.
Track 37: My best friend turns me on to T. Rex, The Velvet Underground, Kate Bush and Patti Smith.
Track 38: A lousy boyfriend introduces me to Syd Barrett (who I love), but ends up making me hate the Talking Heads.
Track 39: My sister leaves her Fegmania cassette at my house, leading to a full-blown obsession with Robyn and the Soft Boys.
Track 40: A work friend lends me their first album. I am immediately smitten.
Track 41: TMBG name drops the YFF in the song Twisting... I investigate and discover another band that I hold dear to my heart.
The mix title comes from the name of a Mexican David Bowie rarities cassette that I bought when I was 17.

Feedback:
Oh this is just wonderful. I'm almost exactly the same age as you, so this is definitely hitting all my right buttons. Lovely work!
lots to love here. we don't have to wait for another birthday for another volume, do we? i can't wait to find out what happened next.
Wow. Happy b-day, b-lady.
This is great, and love the notes too. Happy b'day!
Being a little younger than me you've yet to bump into the C86 scene :). Stunning collection and wonderful notes. Highlights for me are X, Laurie Anderson, Elvis Costello and the Go Gos.
Absolutely stupendous mix and notes by a stupendous gal on a stupendous day (her birthday). Have a happy one!
FYI, if someone else had taken the responsibility and had chosen a Mix of the Week last week (not sure if you know how that works around here now, but it's a weekly thing and the same person can't pick MotW two "weeks"--or mixes--in a row), I would happily name this MotW right now.
This is great. I love this sort of mix and wish more people would make a run at one like it. I made a lot of comparable discoveries over the year, and even aside from the educational value this looks like a dynamite listening experience.
Be thankful you came of age in the '80s, or your mix might have come out more like mine.

Incidentally, I should have said "came of age MUSICALLY" in the '80s since, being 41 myself, we obviously came of age at the same time (physically). Not paying attention to rock in the '70s saved you a bit of trauma, believe me. Happy birthday.
Looks great!
Amazing collection and notes! I'm a smidge younger than you, but also hold a deep personal fondness for many of the songs you picked. A very happy birthday to you and a very well deserved MOTW.
Fantastic! Happy Birthday. Many congrats on a much deserved Mix of the Week. And even more conratulations for your Grammy award, who'd a thought it?
Great mix of course - 41 classics....

Happy Birthday!! Outstanding mix, great cover and a really well-deserved MOTW.
Congrats on the BDay and the MOTW. Lots of great picks but the B-52s, Madness, Violent Femmes, Elvis C and TMBG tracks jump out at me.
this is absolutely phenomenal - a better chosen MOTW i cannot fathom. kudos to you for the mix & props to marc for the pick. love the way this moves from punk & new wave to 60's pop - rather fascinating. would you be interested in a trade for this? i'd love to get me grubby paws on it... (oh & happy birthday, of course of course!!)
Okay. I'm a year younger than you, but somehow you have managed to retain your memory, whereas, mine has disappeared and I can't find it. I think my 3 kids took it but I'm not sure. Happy Birthday. Great selections. Some of the songs do jog my memory a bit. Thanks. Congratulations on the MOTW too.
Wow, I wake up to check my email, and suddenly I've got the MOTW! Thanks, and I'm glad you all like it. I had a great birthday and listening to this brought back a LOT of memories.
Congrats on the b-day and MOTW! I've always been fascinated by these audiobiographies that pop up here now and then. It's alway so great to discover new music... anytime in one's life. BTW, great mix.
What a wonderful collection. Congrats on the birthday and the accolade.
You are so right about personal chronology trumping the official calendar, the year the song finds you is when it makes your charts.
These were some good years for your hit parade . . .

congrats to a wonderful mix and another great year lady of the bugs
Absolutely love everything here. Congrats on the MOTW honours... well deserved... and, uhhhm, happy (belated) birthday as well!
Sooo well deserved. Hiccy Burpday.
Always nice to read about the meanings of songs. Some good influences (though I hope you can get over the lousy boyfriend & give the Talking Heads another chance - check out the middle period with the Eno & Worrell influences)
A fascinating history!
have to say I might have missed this but for the MOTW accolade. My loss -it's superb! Congrats!!
LOL on "my family had pretty odd tastes and rock was not really heard much in my household." I have to keep my kids from walking off with my Dead, Stones and Floyd music.
I see that the Robyn Hitchcock track was very influential in your career path. Nice work!

I love autobiographical mixes and this is superb. Happy B-Day you youngster and congrats on MotW
Me gusta! Your comments are as entertaining as the mix itself. It illustrates how much friends and family influence our musical tastes. Wonderful cover too. And congratulations on MOTW -- and reaching 41. Will there be a 1990-2008 autobiographical mix?
I'm thinking about it...
Sweeet. And, Congrats!
Well earned MOTW! Much here for me to sink my teeth into! I especially liked track 4 from Side 1 and your exploration of late '60s and early '70s music on Side 2; particularly liking tracks 35 & 37. Thanks and congrats!
As if it weren't enough to have you simply back in action. But, KAPOW! Knockin' us dead all over the place. Smashin' us like bugs. Happy birthday. Congratulations on MOTW. I, too, love the autobiographical mix. Lovely notes. Thanks for sharing.
Very many congratulations . . . well deserved . . . . and a nice burpday present to boot !
I'm happy to see They Might Be Giants on there. ;)
This is an amazing accomplishment. I look forward to hearing it.
Jeez! It's like high school all over again. Cograts on a great mix and Mix of the Week.
I picked up the same titled-cassette in a Mexico City bus station when I was 16, but it featured the Stones ;-) This is the definition of a perfect mix.
wow, this is fabulous!
