Comment:

This mix has been brewing for a long time. A few years ago I started to notice that certain songs had a haunting quality that really stuck with me. It wasn't until much later that I realized that what they all had in common was banjo. So many artists are using banjo nowadays in unusual ways that it becomes difficult to identify the instrument. Once I started thinking about songs with banjo in them I felt compelled to put them together on a playlist. Some of these songs have prominent banjo, as in the first track, while with others it is more subtle, either as a background texture, or as part of an ensemble. Still, it always seems to reach out and grab me no matter how small a part it plays in the song. This is a somewhat eclectic assemblage of songs...I discovered banjos in surprising places once I started listening for them.

To paraphrase Stewie Griffin, "This gives me blisters on me fingers!!!"Anyhoo, allow me to say THIS LOOKS TREMENDOUS!!!! I would love to hear this, as a number of these track would be new to me and the one's I am familiar are fantastic. This is a MoTW contender in my book.

Just goes to show that you don't have to pick and grin at the same time. Really wonderful collection...Pentangle, Doc & Merle, Iron & Wine, and Band of Horses being some of my favorites.

Wot, no "Duelling Banjos"??? All the better! this looks like a LOT of fun.

P.S. - How many banjo players does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
(Five - one to screw it in & four to complain that it's electric.)

Yep, certainly another MotW contender. A definite TotW, though (title of the week..).
Love that Sufjan pick, though anything off of Seven Swans would've been great. And I love the Bobby G track. I'll enjoy this...

Nice! I love your opener, as well as the Van, Pentangle, Crumb (!), Bobbie Gentry, Gillian, and Wilco tracks, especially. A fine tribute to an underrated instrument that I'd love to learn how to play.

Not nearly enough tributes to the banjo on this site. Some great picks! (no pun intended)

Personally I prefer the ukulele but there's plenty here to make me change my mind e.g. Bobbie Gentry and Magnetic Fields.

Love the Mag Fields, Van, Leon, Tin Hat Trio, Bela Fleck, New Main Street Singers, Soggy Bottom Boys, Gillian and Willco picks and the concept. Actually did one of these awhile back. Three common artists but no duplicate songs.

finger-pickin' good! Victoria Williams has been on my *Best Of* list ever since I saw her "Merry Go Round" video on MTV's 120 minutes back in the '80s; also loved the Magnetic Fields, Wilco, Band of Horses, Mark Growden, Sufjan Stevens... but my favorite of the set is that awesome song by The New Main Street Singers! Potato's In the Paddy Wagon, indeed!

I'm always glad to see Crumb on a mix, but everything is just right, of course.
