Comment:
twangy, pedal steel guitars. high, lonesome harmonies. a chugging backbeat. melodrama & broken hearts. lost love & whiskey. seriously, what's not to love about country music? this is, for the most part, my very favorite country songs from my favorite performers (country & otherwise) - a sort of companion volume to my hip-hop mix, a yin to its yang, to be reductive. restrictions, however, apply: gram parson's duet with emmylou harris on "love hurts" is my favorite tune of his (& my favorite country song, period, & one of my top 20 all-time favorite songs from any genre), but it just wasn't fitting the way i wanted it to; "she still comes around (to love what's left of me)" is my favorite jerry lee lewis country song, but i felt that "before the next teardrop falls" nestled between the kristofferson & george jones too perfectly not to use; "come pick me up" is probably my favorite ryan adams tune (as it seems to be most people's), yet the achingly gorgeous bridge in & the perfect opener-status of "to be young" permitted its inclusion; & my favorite gillian welch song is probably "paper wings," but its jazzy underpinning didn't really fit the mood i was aiming for (plus, i really wanted to use that opening line as my title).this was partly inspired by & has therefore been in the works since doowad's greasy, finger lickin' series of country mixes in the recent past. yes, i realize there's very little that's surprising, obscure or revelatory here; in fact, it probably looks quite similar to what what alot of country mixes around these parts would look like in the event that there were more floating around. alot of alt.country, country-fried rock, whoopin' honky tonk, tear-in-your-beer barroom weepers. however familiar my taste in country is in rock & roll corners, i have to admit to having an unabashed, enthusiastic adoration for this music. this was actually really close to being a two-disc set, before i settled on the fact that a single-disc primer of my favorite country tunes would be an infinitely stronger listen (& that it is - i've been listening to this constantly since i finished it the other day). the last tracks i had to (painfully) cut were "this old porch" by lyle lovett; "don't pass me by" by the beatles; "hickory wind" by the byrds; & "how much i've lied" by gram parsons. the latter two were cut because, even as gram parsons is my all-time favorite country figure (& one of my top 10 favorite music figures of all-time), it seemed a bit slanted to have a whopping four cuts from him. the lyle lovett & beatles tracks were cut for time constraints, which really hurt (especially the former).
that's pretty much it. title taken from, as mentioned earlier, gillian welch. enjoy!
update: i'm not usually one for posting links or uploads to my mixes - takes away a bit of the incentive, fun & charm of physically creating them, i feel. however, i've gotten enough requests for this, so i figured i'd throw up a link for everyone. it can be found here. you'll need to download & install winrar to extract the files; it's a fairly small, quick & easy-to-use program. shouldn't be too difficult. if there are any problems, just lemme know. most importantly, enjoy!
Feedback:
Hmm. Well, of course I think this is great, as I used tracks 4, 5, 6, 8, 16, 18, 19, and 22 on *my* country mix (for those who'd care to cross-reference, see http://www.artofthemix.org/FindAMix/getcontents.asp?strMixID=74206). I also titled my Gillian Welch mix from years ago "Last night's spangles and yesterday's pearls.") "New Madrid" could be my favorite song that Jeff Tweedy has ever written, and I'm super-fond of your Stones and Hank picks. If I were to guess, Gram probably has had a lot to do with your country taste (as he has with mine, thanks to Sean Lally), since a lot of these tracks seem to be associated with (or, in the case of Ms. Harris'), inspired by him.
I almost fell off my bar stool when I saw this tear-jerker. It's better than the juke box over in the corner....
Great mix! I really like the Patsy Cline. I know if my dad could go on AOTM he would at least put up 5 comments on here! HAPPY MIXING!!!
It's the garbage coming out of Nashville for the past few decades that gives country music such a bad reputation. This is fabulous although I would have made room for those first two cuts.
This is first-rate from beginning to end, anthony. A very apt opener and way too many great picks to list, but I especially the Hank, Burrito Bros., and Willie Nelson. Sooo good.
"seriously, what's not to love about country music?"
amen! this is just wonderful.
amen! this is just wonderful.
I love party dresses that come undone ! I love loads on here too, even though I have to confess to not being the biggest country music fan in the world . . .
Terrific! It's always nice to see another good country mix on the site.
What's not to like?!! Great mix; I'd like to give it a listen right about now.
Wonderful.
Great stuff. Love the high lonesome.
gotta love them louvin bros.
This looks absolutely fantastic!
Top notch.
This features some of the finest songs ever written. Wonderful.
Amazing. I can only handle country "twang" for brief periods of time, but I think I can listen to this almost any time. So many of my favourites are on this. Love, LOVE that Patsy Cline song.
That's got the twang! Country music is so suited to heartbreak, loss & despair; & the artists here who are only visiting the country (ryan, elvis, stones etc. ) must sound right at home in this setting.
THAT IS A CAPITAL MIX, ANTHONY. It is cool how Hank Williams did a song about the record label that so many of these folks are on (ha, ha, jk). Lots of great ones on here.
Wonderful.
What's not to love about this mix? Can't think of anything. Looks wonderful from start to finish.
You can't beat the twangy sound of a pedal steel on a lonely night. Fine mix.
This is stunning. I was toying with the idea of doing a country mix actually, I did an alt-dj with Leif on the subject but never one under my own name. Anyways, I've scrapped that idea for now, as unless it had the exact same tracklisting as this it would inevitably be inferior..
Wow. I'm assembling this mix for myself as I type. Awesome.
all classic stuff here and for a reason I said
I was going to cherry pick the highlights on this but I got up to #12 and realized the wgole thing is just spectacular. Great job, anthony.
This is quite amazing. Really. Quite. Amazing.
"I like this a lot." "Especially the Uncle Tupelo song". "And Elvis Costello and Neil Young".
beautiful all the way through, starting with my favorite adams and ending with one of my favorite dylan tracks. awes.
Love this but especially the 14-17 stretch.
Pristine, and an honor to be even a small inspiration for such a mix.
