Dooky King Productions Proudly Presents: The Best of Peter Rott
Comment:
This mix is something of a historical artifact, and another chapter in
my Rock History.
In 1989 I got bored with working in Berkeley, and got a job working in
an art supply store in San Francisco. While working there I met a cocky
wannabe libertine named Peter. Despite my initial aversion to his
in-your-face personality, his natural charm eventually won me over and
we became great friends. When my Berkeley roommate decided to move in
with her boyfriend, I faced a huge hike in the rent, so I started
looking for a new place to live. Peter had a roommate moving out, so I
made the move to San Francisco's Upper Haight (which was eerily similar
to Berkeley's Telegraph Avenue).
Peter and I started hanging out a lot together, turning each other onto
our musical tastes, having all kinds of debates over which artist or
musical style was better... we were definitely different people-- I was
Beatles, he was Stones, I was Mod/Garage/Quirk while he was
Metal/Glam/Funk. We finally decided that I listened to music with my
brain, and he with his gut. In the year we lived together I introduced
him to Brian Eno, Robyn Hitchcock (he played my copy of Eye to death!),
The Violent Femmes, They Might Be Giants, The Fleshtones and other
bands of that ilk. He in turn got me listening to The Stranglers, The
Fall, Goo Goo Dolls, The Fluid and other bands that paved the way to my
appreciation for Grunge bands. Peter taught me to listen to music with
both my brain and my gut.
By the end of 1991, Peter was ready for a new adventure and was
planning to move to L.A. Before he left, I raided his record collection
to make a farewell mix. This is a slightly truncated version of that
mix. It worked exactly the way I wanted it to-- it both reminded me of
Peter and gave me a lasting example of his musical taste in 1991. I
still listen to it now and again, and ended up liking it so much I
thought I'd share.
Last time I heard, Peter had moved to Manhattan. Wherever you are now,
Peter, this one's for you.
p.s. the title and cover are sort of
an in-joke between us. The title came from a mock debate we'd had about
the proper spelling of the word "dookie". he insisted it should be
spelled with a "y" at the end... while I stood firmly in the "ie"
ending camp (this was several years before the Green Day album was
released). The cover was taken from a flyer he made for his going away
party. We used to always make fun of Jean Claude Van Damme (whose
movies were VERY popular back then), one day I noted a certain
resemblance between them...the rest is "history".

Feedback:
This is a great mix, and a cool story. Brings back memories of my own rock history.
Neat story and mix. Not sure how I listen to music, possibly with my eyebrows..
Very cool mix and story. I like these biomixes that have been popping up here lately. BTW, I managed an art supply store for ten years... a day job while spinning records in bars at night.
great story, buglady. looking forward to this; I'll be listening with my knees and toes.
Great mix and notes. Congratulations for featuring what is *by far* the best Goo Goo Dolls track (my God, did they not become the most awful band ever just after that?!?) ever recorded... I'd even forgotten about it.
Grat story and mix.
Great story and some great songs. Wow, that Kool Moe Dee song brings back some memories....
San Fran stories I like. We were delving into Amoeba records in LA and San Fran two years ago. We may return this year and take in Portland as a good friend I used to run a club and record label with now lives there. Love the Fall, Pink Floyd and Eno tracks.
the very definition of FUN... of course you two could debate that. Great mix and story. Thank you for sharing.
Cool all around. Funny, KathrynandRupert name-checked the same three tracks I would have singled out, though of course "Kiss Off" will always be a particularly potent memory for me, and I still love B.A.D.
what a great story! this right here is proof positive of how important a role music - & more specifically, mixes/mixtapes - plays in our everyday life. if there's ever a college course on the subject, i hereby nominate you as professor. great stuff.
Excellent compilation, deepened and sweeter by the accompanying story...I, for one, always try to listen to music with my ears...;)
Fine story and mix. I've enjoyed it immensely.
Brilliant story, well narrated. I reckon I would have got on pretty well with Peter . . .
Great mix, with a greater story behind it. It is nice to see you so prolific.
