Comment:

"Okay, Carrie, why are you smirking like that?"

"Well, if you must know, I just escaped from the mistaken notion that there are three atheists in this room. Turns out there's only one."

"What, you and Ellen converted to Unitarianism?"

"Nope... I just happened to spot both of your nontraditional gods. The god of hidden universal experiences and the god of hidden universal laws."

"Oh, sure. Just because we have our theories, we must also have our dogmas. Not this tired shtik again."

"Well, Ann's the easy one here. Hers is a belief in something invisible, undetectable, and to use vainly that word the hermit upstairs is right to hate, self-evident. Self-evident, ha! I tell you, that word is the last refuge of the not-quite-godless."

"Yes, I clearly need blind faith to believe that child torture is a bit mean."

"Well, what about me, Carrie? What's this... experience god of mine all about?"

"You hold an implicit belief that only occasionally bubbles to the surface: not just that experience reveals morality, I know that as well, it's the only place that morality could exist! But you also think that, deep under those experiences, there must be a common thread that unites us all together. But, absent a leap of faith, that's where the walk-a-mile-in-my-shoes metaphor breaks down. You can't step in the same pair of shoes twice. You cannot copy experiences. Experiences are far too complex and you'll always miss some vital environmental factor. Even identical twins, to some very small and VERY significant extent, part ways at conception."

"Your point-"

"My point being that there are as many moral laws as there are pairs of shoes - far more. You cannot separate morality from the uniqueness of each and every moment of decision and context. They all relate. You guys- hey, wha- hey Kat, where..."

"What was that about?"

"Was she crying?"

"I thought she dumped Tom, what was she doing here?"

"That doesn't make sense."

"I know."

I'd say this would be relatively high up on the list of best mixes seen this week.

Actually I think you can believe in hidden universal experiences and still be an atheist.

Lots to like in the mix.

I agree with every comment. Wonderful mix, and yes, a favourite Ben Folds choice of mine also. Good stuff..
