Comment:
I want to thank Doowad and all of you out there for the positive vibes. I'm not a religious guy, but positive vibes can't hurt. Soon I'll be off antibiotics and drinking a beer and making an ass out of myself again.Second, I'm not saying I discovered this band and I'm sure many of you are familiar with their work, but I've beeen wanting to make this compilation for twenty-five years.
Sure, if you hum All The Young Dudes, most people will say 'Yeah, I love that song, is that who sings it?' or worse, when someone thinks that Ready For Love was that 'killer Bad Company song'.
I used to go to parties and people would pull out the ubiquitous Mott the Hoople anthology in my honor. It bummed me out on two levels. The first was that people thought that I thought that some of these songs were great when most of the tracks would be Ian Hunter's crybaby whining about 'what a drag' it is to be an aging rock n' roll star. And secondly, I would think to myself, what corporate bonehead put this together?
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy this rocker. Tell me
what you think. The Wad (abides)
Feedback:
A band of legend that I am learning more about here at AOTM. Thanks for the lesson in ROCK! I look forward to the download.Glad to hear you're feeling better!
Ian Hunter was my first rock n roll hero. Thanks for reminding me and everyone how great Mott was. Despite his whining, Ian has aged nicely.
Glad to hear you're doing better and enjoy the suds. Remember, beer kills germs, too! These guys were big while I was in college. Some of these tracks will be a real trip back in time. Thanks for the link. Can't wait to give it a listen.
Nicely done. I did a single-disc comp of theirs a couple of years ago. You'd probably think that I included a couple too many of Ian's weepers, though you hit many of my favorites ("The Moon Upstairs," "Death May Be Your Santa Claus," "I Wish I Was Your Mother," "All the Way from Memphis," "Dudes," "Honaloochie Boogie," and "Rock and Roll Queen," to name a few) here.
one of those bands who have been slipping under my radar for years, though i'm quite interested in checking them out - this looks like an ideal intro
One of those bands that were prominent just before I got heavily into music and somehow I've never explored them. Time now perhaps. All the best, I'll raise a glass to your health tonight while we're DJing in Sheffield, England.
I like what I know from them, which isn't nearly enough. Past time I did something about that. Continued best wishes!
Great band. Saw them open for Quicksilver Messenger Service in Philly in 1970. They put on a ferocious show that blew Quicksilver off the stage. And those first couple of albums were awesome. Of course the later Young Dudes era stuff was pretty good too!
My favorite of theirs is "All The Young Doowads."
The most underrated rock 'n' roll band in history? Well...I don't know about that. But one thing's for sure: Mott The Hoople has always been a pretty damn special rock 'n' roll band! (And Ian Hunter has always been a gifted and extremely underrated songwriter as well.)
I have to say that I really love all the songs you've included here, and there is not one thing here I would change!
"Boogaloo dudes, carry the news!" :-)

Been sinking my teeth into your mix and really getting off on such songs as Sweet Jane, Mamma's Little Jewell, Honaloochie Boogie, Sucker, You Really Got Me, and One of the Boys. I'd Include All the Young Dudes, but like such songs as Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum, It's been over played (at least in the San Francisco Bay Area). I also like the song Darkness, Darkness, but by the Youngbloods instead (bubbled under in 1969 and reached #86 in '70).Mott the Hoople should've done better in the U.S., and they probably would have if they could have compromised some of their songs to edit them down time wise say from 25-50% shorter than the 5 minutes or longer that they liked to jam at. But then some songs, like sucker, I wouldn't mess with, like sucker which I think is just perfect at 5 minutes. Thanks for this Wad, it's been a joy!
Whoa! 'the Hoople! Good luck to you Wad.
Ahh, Mott -the first rock'n'roll band I loved. From the moment I encountered Thunderbuck Ram on the Island Bumpers sampler, they've always had a special place n my heart. Pity you didn't find room to include it but otherwise a fine & fitting tribute.
Old man, this was a pleasure to be a part of. I look forward to hearing the revised version you mentioned. Lo estimo de a madres, compadre!!
