Mmm Mmm MAMBO!
Comment:
Before the Twist , there was the
MAMBO , a dance craze that swept the nation back in the day when dance crazes swept the nation.
In the hope of re-launching that same dance craze again this summer, the inimitable & indispensible tornadoz & I have assembled this tribute to the Mambo Kings of a half-century ago. Our motto: "The Mambo: a dance you can believe in!"
Most of the authentic mambos here come from the Vast Vinyl Archive of Tornadoz, whereas I have tried to bring the mix down to my own level by throwing in a lot of kitschy pop mambo-exploitation numbers. I guess I take the opposite approach from real musicologists who are obsessed with authenticity & would scorn any so-called mambo that strays from its Cuban roots, whereas what delights me most is to hear the bastard variations like "Gumbo Mambo", the "Peter Gunn Mambo", the "Dragnet Mambo", etc. That's just what happens, folks, when pop culture takes a big gulp.
But you can at least be thankful that I've spared you one truly frightening offshoot of Mambo-Mania, the dreaded Country & Western Mambo.
Gluttons for punishment can go to the Hillbilly Mambo blog & download to their hearts' content, but I warn you, just because anything with the word "Mambo" in the title sold like crazy in 1954 doesn't mean that it was all good. Au contraire!
There was even, of course, a Christmas Mambo sub-genre ("Jingle Bells Mambo", "We Wanna See Santa do the Mambo", etc.), but I'm leaving those to the Xmas novelty record fans, since that's who they were made for.
Uploading is a bit of a struggle for me, but -- inspired by the generous spirit of tornadoz -- I've managed it just this once, for a limited time only (7 days from posting, so get it while it's hot), here .
All I ask is that if you do download, please let me know how you like it (or not!).
Okay, all together now: Mambo like you mean it!
Feedback:
Great notes, joey, and I don't have to download to know I will love this mix the two of you put together.
I like dance crazes!This looks awesome,well done!
The sheer enthusiasm of the mix comments gives me happy feet. Que bueno!
Yep, I love the enthusiasm here too. I hope that you can make this sweep the nation. Haven't downloaded yet, but I'm hoping to later.
sorry, forgot to say, brilliant cover pic. Is that genuine grafitti? (I have a sad interest in takking photos of interesting grafiti).
This rocks beyond reason!
i have little doubt this will be compulsively listenable (& danceable) given the talent involved - can't wait to hear it
A mix I can believe in! Another JDV classic for the ages.
Where are my dancing shoes now that you provide the right music? Another mix supremo, muchachos!
Mambo Idiotica, that's how I dance. Has anyone done a song called Rambo Mambo? If not, why not?
Every time someone drops "Papa Loves Mambo" at a club, I get a warm fuzzy sensation. This is *great*, guys!
Surprise! What a mambo team. I see that you even included the original Mambo No. 5 by Perez Prado.
I'm sayin' tornadoZ on odds and joey on evens. Any arguments on that?

Mixxer, it's not strictly alternating, & in fact at the last minute my friend Enid who's not even an AOTMer contributed a few, so the exact DNA of this mix is pretty much indecipherable -
& gobi, yes that's a real graffito by Sweet G of los cerdos; I too have a fondness for good graffiti & even once put out a little xeroxed book called "the Golden Age of Bay Area Graffiti".
But what does that have to do with the mambo?, you might well ask. Well, it's all connected, somehow . . .

thanks for letting me contribute to the mix. had lots of fun digging out the mambos; just let me know when you'll begin stockpiling the rumbas. looking forward to hearing how this all falls into place!
Yeah, Mambo!
As per usual, looks fun and informed.
A link! Hooray, hooray, hooray. It may be a one off, and I'm not to fussed about that, as I love trading with JDV ( Can't get enough of those Sunday funnies ). Great work guys..
Tre-frikkin-mendous.
I wasn't familiar with many of these songs or artists, but I love dancing and would love to learn the mambo. This is great, I've been listenening all weekend.
perfectly arranged, S±r. de Vivre. love those Lark Sisters, all the Yma, Guitar Gable (though I accidentally first typed "Guitar Bagle." what would that sound like). anyway, this is filled with treats I hadn't heard before... but doesn't hearing Mambos No. 5 & 8 just make you wonder what Mambos 1-4 and 6 & 7 sound like? Is there a Mambo #9? this could drive me crazy if I let it.
I like you.
