Comment:

for my dear friend jared, who called last week with some good news: his band is playing athens popfest this year! he wanted to cover "the ballad of floppy and the charmers" at the popfest (where bunnygrunt will be playing also) but lost the tape i made him ages ago with the song on it. since i only have that song on vinyl, i used the opportunity to include a lot of stuff i've been ignoring for a while since my vinyl collection has been gathering dust. mix-cds are so easy and effortless, and i forgot how involved mixtape-making is! called "an ambitious effort" because i think it's not as good as it could be, specifically where sound levels are concerned. i'm sending this off now with a promise to send one that sounds better in the future. back when i was in high school i made mix-tapes on one of those cd/cassette/turntable combo stereos and the sound quality was always terrible. i've had a proper stereo for a couple of years now, a receiver and two tape decks and a cd deck and a turntable and big fancy speakers and really, i should be making more and better mix-tapes than ever. i'll work on that.
jared and i have known each other going on eleven years now. we met in high school and dated for most of that and now live 1200 miles apart. this mix is full of memories, like the time we saw atom and his package play in early 2001 and he played "shopping spree" and we couldn't get over how great it was, the staggers videos we used to watch on this silly saturday program featuring indie music videos. aside from a select few newer songs this mix feels like a time capsule, and i like that. yes, those yo la tengo and queers tracks are both beach boys covers, and i like them both for different reasons. the kevin devine track is, of course, a neutral milk hotel cover. hopefully he loves this. complete with hand-made cover art.edit: thanks for the lovely comments. there are now links to a couple of downloads that i'll leave up for a while so please grab them and love them.

This looks like a really fun summer mix. I have not heard that Breeders track in forever and it's certanly time to rectify that.

Would have loved to see a link for this as there is much to discover. I'd go for a trade, too.

Lots to explore on here, and given their company they've got to be great. Excellent!
