A Few of My Favorite Things
Artist | Song | |
Mika | Love Today | |
Mika is like, my happy-bouncy, get-pumped, roll-down-the-windows-on-a-perfect-sunny-afternoon-and-blast-it music. I have no idea what any of his songs are about, but they are extremely catchy and always instantly put a smile on my face. Plus they are great fun to dance to.
Vanessa Carlton | White Houses
This is my favorite song in the whole wide world. Every line has been applicable to my life at some point. This summer has been a particularly `White Houses' summer. This song is particularly meaningful to me because it is the theme song for my group of friends. I compiled footage of us freshman year and put it to this song. If you ever see any of us write the words, `In my heart, it's the eight of us', that is from this song. We changed the number, but the feeling is the same.
Billy Joel | Prelude/Angry Young Man
I absolutely adore the prelude. Whenever I'm really upset I turn this song on and let the angry piano wash over me.it calms me down. When we read Catcher in the Rye in 10th grade, I brought this song in because I felt like it fit Holden perfectly. And the line `He's never been able to learn from mistakes, so he can't understand why his heart always breaks' really hits home for me.
Karen Olivo | It Won't Be Long Now
from In the Heights OST In the Heights is one of my favorite musicals, and while I love pretty much every song in the first act and listen to it over and over again, this song is the best. I have always related to the feeling of wanting to get out, of wanting more (that theme will crop up a lot on this mix). I love this song so much I actually want to name my child Vanessa so I can sing the line, `Good morning, Vanessa.if it isn't the lovliest girl in the place' to her. And yes, I do know all the words to the little rap segment.
Five for Fighting | The Riddle
This song is all about family and love. And it just makes me really happy. The idea that family, that the people you love, are the "reason for the world", is one of the purest and truest statements. `I love you free, I love you freely' is one of the best lines in the world, in my humble opinion. It just is one of the most simple yet eloquent ways of saying, `I love you, unconditionally, no matter what'.
Goo Goo Dolls | Slide | |
This is one of my favorite love songs. It's simple and sweet: "I wanna wake up where you are", and "What you feel is what you are, and what you are is beautiful". This song has particular meaning to me because in a story I wrote once, this song was the background music (in my head) for a very important scene.
Paul Simon | You Can Call Me Al
We played this in marching band sophomore year, and I have been in love with it ever since. Dancing/marching around to this song was one of the few things that made me happy that awful fall/winter. I love blasting this while driving around. BAH-duh-duh-DAH! Awesome.
Zac Efron | Ladies' Choice
from Hairspray (movie soundtrack) Ignoring the fact that Zac Efron is the one singing, this song is fabulous. I am amazed that this song was not in the actual stage show and was written just for the movie. They should put it in the show, it's so good. I absolutely love big-band sock hop type songs, and this one just captures that feel perfectly.
Barenaked Ladies | The History of Everything
love this song because it is the theme song of my favorite show, The Big Bang Theory. Also, he finds a rhyme for Australopithecus. That is the mark of a true lyricist.
"Weird Al" Yankovich | White & Nerdy
I love this song, because I am a geek.
Fountains of Wayne | Hey Julie
I discovered this song because they used it in an episode of another one of my favorite shows, Scrubs. And then I fell in love with it and ended up featuring it in the movie I made for Television junior year, and submitted to the Student Film Fest (semi-finalist, baby!). This song has been a surprisingly big part of my life. And I'm not sick of it yet, lol.
Madeline | I Left the Light On
This is a short, quirky little song that popped up on my Pandora station and I fell in love with instantly. It's just so upbeat and happy!
Kristin Andreassen | Crayola Doesn't Make a Color for Your Eyes
This is one of the most original love songs I have ever heard. It is so cute. This is another song that I just.found, Dad and I just happened to hear the singer perform this song on NPR one morning, and we fell in love with it immeadiately. I love the incorporation of the hand-clapping and whistling. It is just wonderful.
Brian D'Arcy James | Who I'd Be
from Shrek The Musical OST Okay, I know what you're thinking. `Shrek? The MUSICAL? Really?' Yeah, really. Hey, I know where you're coming from, I thought it would suck too. But then I saw it with the Drama department back in March, and it was surprisingly really really good. And this song is the best in the entire show. If I were an English teacher, I would use it to teach the romance unit. It captures the essence of heroes perfectly. I personally like the way they describe poets.
Cara Dillon | Bold Jamie | |
Oh my God, I love this song so much. I'm Irish, so we listen to a lot of Celtic-y music. And this song is the best Celtic folk song I have ever heard. The instrumental part always makes me want to do interpretive dance. The only drawback to this song is that the story being told in it has a complete cliffhanger ending! We think Jamie gets sent to America.
Jeff Bowen | Nine People's Favorite Thing
from [title of show] OST This song is my mantra. Whenever I start comparing myself to other people and moping about how I'm not as good as them, I remember this song and it makes me feel better.
Nickel Creek | When You Come Back Down
Every time I have had a boyfriend go off to college, be it halfway across the country or just down the road to HCC, I have listened to this song and it helped me. And now, I'm the one doing the leaving. So I'm hoping this song will help him while I'm away. Then the song can finally be applied in the way it was meant to be, since the speaker is supposed to be male. It's a very pretty, sad little love song, and Nickel Creek is my absolute favorite group.
Sutton Foster | Astonishing
from Little Women OST This song is the story of my life. I have always felt that, as she says, there must be somewhere I can be astonishing. That I am meant for great things. And this song captures that feeling perfectly.
Alison Wood | Forever Fading
I love listening to this on sunny fall days.
Discovery Channel | I Love the Whole World
Yes, I loved this Discovery Channel commercial so much that I found a way to get the audio. I listen to this after work when I feel like crap, and it reminds me that life outside my job is still good. Also, this is an example of the type of thing I want to make. I think this is wonderful, brilliant. I am dying to make a commercial like this. |
