Comment:

Oh this mixtape was quite hard because there were so many I could not include with a ten song limit. So to solve that problem, as I suggested last week, I looked for duets and collaborations. This is one of the few times on 10 Songs Blog you will ever see me toot a horn and say you should probably own some music by all of the artists on my mixtape if you want to be considered (at least by me and other music snobs) well versed in music and (gasp!) an elitist (this is a good thing by the way). St. Louis Blues - Bessie Smith & Louis Armstrong (HELLO! They are two legends/icons of music. I just found out that this recording is considered one of the greatest recordings of the 1920s! So yay! And it is pretty awesome Louis' trumpet playing is just so smooth) Ain't Misbehavin' - Fats Waller (It's one of my all time favorite recordings, period by one of my all time favorites! His phrasing has never been matched.) It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing - Duke Ellington & Ella Fitzgerald & Ray Nance live at the Cote D'Azur, French Riviera (Jesus! That woman could scat like no other and the sax player my lord! This a perfect example of a voice as the instrument and some singer don't need to write songs because they take other's work and just make it their own. This also reminds me of just how much popular music and slid into this mire of money and nothing but visuals. Nothing today comes close to this talent, nothing.) O Patria Mia from Puccini's Aida - Leontyne Price (One of the greatest, if not the greatest, performances and recordings in Opera and frankly in music in general. She got an ovation that lasted over 30 minutes!) All In Love Is Fair - Junior Walker & Stevie Wonder (Since I didn't get an instrumental from the jazz but I figured I'd surprise ya'll with this duet. "Back in the day", it wasn't just the jazz folks who had real prowess on instruments.) Sinner's Prayer - Ray Charles & B.B. King (Two of the best musicians, period.)

Next Week's Theme: Did you really think 10 songs was enough for Black History month? Neither did a whole lot of other folks. Thus next week's theme is black history month part 2 more "black" artists you want to recognize and this time I'll open it up to the rest of the world seeing as how Harry Belefonte was important in our black history during civil rights and beyond. Also African music certainly informed a lot of western music like Paul Simon's `Graceland'. And you can have one artist post 90s (gasp) to honor the history that is to come.

Or. you can prep for women's history month by picking 10 songs with women's names in the title (Sweet Caroline, Adia, Stella By Starlight.). Oh and let's go 50/50 on this one, 50 male artists and 50 female artists just because that would be fun. OR. you can do both theme's! OR you can do both on one mixtape! Now there is a challenge! I wonder what I'm going to do?
