Comment:

In just less than a 25 years, Elvis Costello has
amassed a catalogue of 18 studio albums, several
collections of rarities, a couple best-ofs, a live
album, an acoustic live box set, including
collaborations with the likes of the Pogues,
Paul McCartney, the Brodsky Quartet, Elvis
(Presley)'s back-up band, and most recently,
Burt Bacharach, along with numerous other
writing and production credits.

This is a relatively democratic collection of songs,
containing at least one track from each of his
studio albums, and thus, it's all over the place in
terms of genre--there are hints of punk, R & B,
jazz, country, Celtic folk, classical, show and film
score music here, even dashes of electronica (check
"My Dark Life") all held together with an
impeccable pop sensibility and Elvis' trademark
venomous verbosity.

Admittedly, there are few rarities here (fully two
thirds of these songs can be found on one or the
other of two hits compilations: "The Very Best of
Elvis Costello and the Attractions" (Rykodisc), and
"Extreme Honey" (Warner Bros.)), but you'll never
find all of these songs together anywhere else, and
if you're curious about Elvis, but not totally sure,
a mix tape is a whole hell of a lot cheaper than
two CDs.
