the perfect soundtrack to "please kill me..." as usual, this kicks ass. cute pic of dee dee and stiv too!
Don't you think many British bands had a little to part to play in the origins of punk rock?
No Modern Lovers?!?
Nice selection....but very Sire-ish....remember "If it ain't Stiff, it ain't worth a fuck"

Not really a modern lovers fan. as for it being "sire -ish", blondie and patti smith barely made the cut. i'm not sure who else you would have had me add. and the british came later and nearly destroyed punk rock.
this mix would have been perfect as the audio portion of my history of punk rock paper. nice job.
british punk nearly destroyed punk rock? What?!!? The Clash nearly destroyed punk rock? Wire? Pistols? What are you talking about....? I absolutely love 3/4s of the artists on this record, but you can not say they all hold as much relevance as the three (most obvious) selections I've just listed. No way. "nearly destroyed punk rock"- explain yourself.
amazing mixed tape.

good stuff.
explain myself? um okay. and i will say it, the above artists hold more relevance than the bands you listed. why? because the pistols, etc. merely mimicked new york bands. although i enjoy the clash and wire, the uk scene was completely manufactured by mclaren after he visited ny. these bands took punk rock out of the underground and onto the charts, where its shelf life was short. record execs created new wave, and punk was dead in the collective consciousness. they turned punk rock into a ridiculous trend. it would take an essay to fully explain. we would both highly recommend reading "please kill me" by leggs mcneal. punk rock research is fun. saves the day does suck. also, that denimzine site is cool.
Compare the fact that The Clash recorded their first 7" at Abbey Road whilst US punk languished in the margins of society & draw your own conclusions about the social & economical differences between the two shores. Cool mixes, BTW. The only thing I'd add to this is Pere Ubu's "Final Solution". My fave proto-punk track outside of, uhm, the first Modern Lovers LP.
My opinion was not that Britain was responsible for 'punk'. No at all, i just said wire and clash were far more relevant to punk than a couple of moochers on your otherwise sound mix. the uk scene was manufactured? to a commercial extent id agree with that, but that is absolutely untrue with regards to the vibrant, politicized happenings in the less-trendy perimeters of london, as well as leeds, newcastle, etc. they did not 'mimic ny punk'. ask the television lot, RH, suicide why they feel so strongly about this lesser-known british scene and it's profound influence.
punk good, punk start in ny, some good punk in uk (ie my working class rip off mix). can we agree on this?
sure can. at the end of the day, you put together a cool mix!
NICE picks and a great mix.
haha, yeah, I wrote a paper on the History of Punk but I focused more on the Clash, Pistols and the Ramones, cuz I had to make it more non-US (but I could put in a little, hence the Ramones). But after writing it, my ideas about it's beginning have shifted to the UK... dammit! Oh yeah, awesome pic.
