Comment:
I'm not really a big fan of putting music into neat little boxes by decades, but my nephew requested five songs for a CD I was going to make him for his birthday and three of them happened to be released in 1987, the year he was born. So after I finished his CD (which turned out to be all '87 songs, except for the two he asked for that were not), I set about to make my own '87 collection. I know it's not an original idea, but I have thought that others who have done year mixes have done great jobs so I thought I'd give it a shot. I stand behind all these songs--even the ones that might not necessarily be classics at least amuse me, give me something to think about, or relate to a specific moment in my life in 1987. My last pick was a choice between Michael Jackson's "Bad" and Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly." Michael won. I'm thinking I'm going to do more year mixes as the spirit moves me, so watch out.Feedback:
This is a great mix. 1987 was a great year for music. U2 and Los LObos remind me of my senior year spring break in Florida. "The Joshua Tree" and "By the light of the moon" had just come out. I had them each taped on one side of a cassette and drove me friends crazy the whole week. X's "See how we are" came out in '87 also. "4th of July" is a great cut, written by the Blasters' Dave Alvin.
I also got into the Replacements and Dwight Yoakam, of all artists, that same year.
Once again, great job here.

Thanks, alexd! It was a tough choice to pick just one song from Pleased to Meet Me, but "Can't Hardly Wait" makes a great end track, I think. I like the X album very much also, somehow I didn't realize it came out in '87. I'm a big Dwight Yoakam fan also, but have only become one in the last few years.
Interesting mix. 1987 was the year I began to rediscover country music thanks largely to Dwight Yoakam. I remember the first time I heard him. He was on TV doing "Guitars and Cadillacs" and I was amazed at how great he was. When the song was over I turned to my wife and started raving, and she said "You mean you liked that?" She's since come around, though...
"Guitars and cadillacs" was my introduction to DY too....Yoakam came up through the LA club scene at the same time as Los Lobos, X, the Blasters and Lone Justice. Those must have been some crazy weekends at "the Whiskey a go-go". My future brother in law turned me on to Dwight in 1987. All he ahd released to that point was Guitars and Cadillacs and Hilbilly Deluxe. I bought them both the same day. Within a year, I ws into the "new country" artists like Steve Earle and fringe stuff like Jason and the scorchers, Del Fuegos and the Beat Farmers. My wife loves today's country music. I listen to it and laugh. It's too formula for me, at least the stuff they play on the radio. Then they play some country version of "sweet home Alabama" and my wife thinks it's the greatest thing. I guess some watered down Skynyrd is better than no Skynyrd at all.
By the way, the newly released Blasters double CD compilation really rocks. The greatest American band most people have never heard of. A true American mix of country, rockabilly and R&B.
