Comment:
Ed's Redeeming Qualities was founded by Dom Leone when the band's members were attending college in New Hampshire. The Original line-up consisted of Dom, his cousin Dan Leone (Ukelele, vocals), Carrie Bradley (acoustic guitar, violin and vocals) and Neno Perotta (bongos, clarinet, rice in a can). Dom and Dan's cousin Joe occasionally contributed vocals as well (he is featured on Lighthouse). Dom wrote the majority of the original songs and was an integral part of the band until his untimely death by leukemia at the age of 24. In the wake of his death the band moved west to San Francisco, where I first discovered them. Their sound is quirky folk pop, with a tinge of sadness. It's really wonderful stuff, and I highly recommend it. This comp mostly consists of my favorite tracks from their first two albums. The opening track is from an old demo, featuring Dom Leone on vocals.Feedback:
shit, i don't know anything abouit this, please send me a disc so i know what you are talking about
I've really never heard of this band, but that's one hell of a title you got there.
i'm clueless as well, but your mini-bio has me curious.
Okay, I'm totally familiar with who this band is, but have only heard a track or two (I think) on mixes that you've sent me. This could be one to place in the pile later this summer...
Clueless as well, but your recommendation alone certainly has me interested.
Yes, I've heard the name, but not the sound. There must be someone (besides you) on AOTM who's familiar with these guys!
Ed's Redeeming Qualities! Wow, I have this album by them called Big Grapefruit Cleanup Job. The Breeders covered the Ed's Redeeming Qualities song "Drivin' On 9" on Last Splash. Good jump fishing out a group that has slipped thru the cracks.
I'd like to hear this, buglady. Nice work
Big Grapefruit Cleanup Job is their third album, which also has some classic songs on it. It was the result of a live show at Klub Komotion in San Francisco. I had planned to end the CD with Drivin' On 9 recorded by Dom, but I ran out of space.
p.s. Carrie played violin for the Breeders on the tours for both of their albums.
I too am unfamiliar with this band's sound, but not the name.
Holy Hannah! I haven't heard these folks in ages. Please to be saving me a copy, Bugula.
Hey, buglady, you almost scored a shut out, stumping the AOTM folks on this one. Too bad none of them will ever see Dan Leone playing his homemade one-string bass, but if they log onto http://www.sfbg.com/36/35/x_cheap_eats.html, they can read his meat-eater and wallet-friendly weekly restaurant reviews.
I don't know how I missed this when you first posted it! I love ERQ, saw them once and talked to Dan Leone a couple of times. He's a great guy, and they're a great band. Also, I've taught Dan's short story "Spinach" a couple of times. Have you ever read it, buglady? Let's do a trade some time!
I can't say that I've heard of these guys, but about your title--that actually happened to me when I was a kid!!! I'm also intruiged because I study insects (and you're the bug lady...) :-)
