From a friend's inspiration: so many bands have written songs about California that you could make a mix tape of just those. Turns out that you could make several. Here are 20 that hang together as a narrative, proving that the sunshine state is as much a place in the mind as on the earth. This disc is broken into 3 acts. Act 1 ends after Joni Mitchell; Act 2 ends after Billy Bragg and Wilco; and Act 3 ends the disc. I did try to eliminate the obvious 3 songs, btw: California Dreamin', California Girls, and Hotel California. The Ramones cover of California Sun, however, was irrisistable.

The two best songs on here are Joni Mitchell's and Led Zeppelin's. Nice theme though.
