Comment:

Few, if any, blues legends are as legendary or lasting as Stagger Lee. A gambler, Stagger (or Stack) threw dice with Billy DeLyon (or Lyons), and had a horribel losing streak when he shot a lucky 7. Billy called it an 8 and took Stack's money and his Stetson hat. In some stories, Stack's hat is magical with gifts from the Devil. Stack, who was a bad man, shot Billy with his gun( a 32, a 44, or a 45). Billy first begged for his life, telling Stack about his wife and children. Sometimes the wife is weepy and loving, sometimes she is sick, and in one version, she's one of the "girls on the corner" who gets arrested for turning tricks. Sometimes Billy's got 2 kids and sometimes 3. But Stack won't listen to his pleading and shoots him. Shoots him "so hard" that the bullet goes through Billy and breaks the bartender's glass sitting on the counter. And it doesn't end there. Stack's so pissed at Billy that when he dies, he goes and fights the Devil for Billy's soul. And wins. He's a bad man, that cruel old Stagger Lee. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . The picture is of the Grateful Dead bear.

Great idea. There must be hundreds of versions of that song recorded, but this is a great selection.

Mo: actually, there are more than 130. I chose these from the ones I could find based on their differences in sound. I tend to have a CD running over and over in the car and I'm driving a lot this summer, so the sound can't be repepetitive, even if some of their lyrics are repeated.

Nice job with one of my favorite songs. Major props for digging up the Hunter version (one of my favorites), and of course the Archibald versions, which kick so much ass it's not even funny. I didn't know a few of these existed (Elvis, James Brown), can't wait to find them now!
