Comment:

So, just as I'm leaving my local Giant Supermarket the other night, I hear ELO's "Telephone Line" over "Giant Radio." I am subsequently haunted by it for days after, resulting in this compilation CD. No rarities (I wouldn't know an album track from ELO if it bit me on the nose) and not even complete (for example, "Do Ya" is not on it, but I was just dealing with whatever I have around the house-I'm not going to haunt flea markets and used record stores to get "Do Ya"), but this CD will serve its purpose. I can't say I'm actually even a huge fan of ELO, but boy can that Jeff Lynne guy write an incredibly haunting ballad when he wants to. And, while I may catch hell for this, I feel that the inclusion of ELO's collaboration with Olivia Newton-John, "Xanadu" was absolutely essential to this collection. I've occasionally fantasized about watching the first scene of Citizen Kane while listen to ELO/ONJ's "Xanadu" but so far I've yet to do this. The Randy Newman track that opens this collection is, in my opinion, a brilliantly funny parody of ELO, both musically and lyrically ("I love their 'Mr. Blue Skies'/Almost my favorite is 'Turn to Stone'/And how 'bout 'Telephone Line'"?/I love that E.L.O.") Of course, the truly funny thing is that Jeff Lynne would go on to produce some tracks for Newman in the late '80s. Yeah, I love that E.L.O too.

LOL ELO can have that "haunting" effect on you, but it's not always a *good* haunting. ;-) Interesting mix, Rich, but I've got to express regret at your non-inclusion of what is BY FAR my favorite tune of theirs, "Can't Get It Out of My Head". Oh yeah, Jeff Lynne as a producer is the true Antichrist. Have a great holiday!

Xanadu & Citizen Kane? LOLLOL! Gotta confess I really like A New World Record, Out Of The Blue and a few of their earlier songs, e.g. CGIOOMH. There's an Adrian Belew song called Big Blue Sun that sounds like HE heard Mr. Blue Sky in a market!

Strange, I heard an ELO track for the first time in years last week on a film soundtrack. They're one of those bands I liked as a kid that I'm sure I wouldn't like all that much now; but may be I'm wrong!?Nice mix all the same (except may be not enough from Out of the Blue).

I did indeed initially forget to post "Can't Get It Out of My Head" on the track list, but it is indeed on the CD. Can't have an ELO compilation w/o "Can't Get It Out Of My Head"!

Well..., I don't mind saying this, AT ALL, ELO was the first band I fell in love with...I use to sit for hours listening to "Eldorado" and "Face the Music", ('74-'75), they were also the first band I saw "in concert"....1976. So, just to point out the differences between people.....it is a "good haunting" for me, always will be. That being said, I completely understand other's lukewarm attitude for them, and I'm not a fan of everything they've done, I think after "Out of the Blue" they were done.....I also think Jeff Lynne is a bastard-and-a-half on principal, but for an unabashed "pop hound" like me-----they do it! "One Summer Dream" *haunts* me, as does "Nightrider".....Cheap Trick's "ELO KIddies" would've fit well on here, too...."Midnight..., on the water,...)
