Comment:
Last month, under odd circumstances, I stayed at the notorious Chelsea Hotel in NYC for the first time. This was strange for me considering I've lived not 2 blocks away from it for over six years. Long story... Regardless, it was hard not to be caught in the spell of the amazing history of the place. Residents over the years include Dylan Thomas, Sarah Bernhardt, William S. Burroughs, Donald Sutherland, Sam Shepard, Robert Crumb, Robert Mapplethorpe, Diego Rivera, Tennessee Williams, Thomas Wolfe, Mark Twain,...the list goes on. Among the famous residents were many famous musicians. Bob Dylan wrote Sad Lady of the Lowlands while living there. Joni Mitchell wrote Chelsea Morning during her time within its walls. Leonard Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel" is said to be written for Janis Joplin whom he met in the lobby one day. This is also the infamous hotel where Sid Vicious, of the Sex Pistols, allegedly killed Nancy. Putting these eclectic artists together was less of a challenge than I anticipated. Maybe there is a common thread that flows through their music that also led them to the Chelsea Hotel.Feedback:
great idea and tremendous mix.
Fantastic!
My, my my...there is nothing like the feling when you pass by the Chelsea...i've never been in but perhaps now I'll make a stop...some beautiful choices and it's always nice to see some Janis Joplin on this site...hope the NY summer isn't keeping you too hot...
Great mix...I wonder if you thought about putting Elvis Costello's "I Don't Want To Go To Chelsea" on it?
excellent concept
great theme. I felt the same sort of inspiration when I went to City Lights Books in San Fran.
I think we have a contender for mix of the week (unless they do more canuck crap)
Skills, with three Joni songs and one from Mr. Cohen, some might think THIS is "canuck crap" ;-) I, on the other hand, also think this is a contender. I'll have to try and visit this landmark the next time I see my bro in the city.
well, its bohemian days are long gone but it still has some oddball charm. Theres a bar in the basement and you can look around in the lobby. Its real hard to get a room as there are some many permanent tenants, but as one European friend told me its fairly reasonably priced (for NYC)
this is a really nice mix. and great, that you included moondog in it. thanks!
