DAVID BOWIE - BOWIETAPE 1969-1980
Comment:
My girlfriend recently got a car (sans CD player) and has asked me to make her some tapes. I know she likes Bowie, but she doesn't own anything by him and has mainly heard the hit singles. So I threw this together last night...a 120 minute tape focusing on what I'd consider his essential period. There's nothing academic about it--I threw it together in the same way I used to throw tapes together 10 years ago...by sitting in front of the stereo with all the CDs in question and arranging it on-the-fly. (In other words, I didn't time anything out beforehand). Came out pretty nice, but there was about 15 songs I had to excise (most regrettably perhaps was the "Lady Stardust" demo, which I originally wanted to end the tape). But I did get to squeeze on some cool rarer stuff from the old Ryko CDs (including the "Sound + Vision" box) and managed to stray from most of the big oversaturated hits. Ah well, I think it works alright....and hey, it's 31 more Bowie songs than she owned before. :-) (Songs I had to excise: "Width Of A Circle," "Changes," "Quicksand," "Five Years," "Suffragette City," "Lady Stardust (demo)," "John, I'm Only Dancing (sax version)," "Drive In Saturday," "Panic In Detroit," "Lady Grinning Soul," "Future Legend/Diamond Dogs," "Candidate (demo)," "Dodo," "Sweet Thing," "Fame," "Stay," "Word On A Wing," "Station To Station," "Golden Years," "Speed Of Life," "Sound + Vision," "Beauty And The Beast," "The Secret Life Of Arabia," "African Night Flight," "Look Back In Anger," "Scream Like A Baby," "Teenage Wildlife," "It's No Game (Part 2)" and "Alabama Song.")Feedback:
Good one Keymaster! She should be absolutely shakin' by TVC15....!
Some cool picks, although I'd probably go really, really heavy on Hunky Dory myself. You did, however, include "Queen Bitch", my favorite Bowie song.
*damnit* Ahh, that "Word On a Wing" shoulda' been on the "LOVE, V17" mix......"...I'm trying hard to fit among your scheme of things..." (Now I'm gonna' have ta' go pulll out the vinyl.....(slinks off)
I agree, Rob..."Hunky" is one of my top favorites, along with "Aladdin Sane" (#1) and "Low." Can't go wrong with anything off those first two albums. But as I said, I didn't plan this out before making it, and I wanted to represent all the albums semi-equally (at least on the first side).
Valis...I think "Word On A Wing" is about God, actually.
Indeed...., but she wouldn't *know* that.......
