Comment:

The oft-debated question of whether a cover version can ever supercede the original is given a mucky-great pasting here, as The Door's Ed Sullivan-baiting testament to genital arsony is given the 53-times over. This springs from a quick discussion with the cute girl and the rest of the guys in my favourite record store (Imperial in Bristol!), but is by no means exhaustive. Will Young is present for argument's sake, comfortably straddling the capable thighs of PopIdol-past David Essex. I fancy Young Holt Unlimited's much-sampled version, but to say that it betters Ray Manzarek's immortal organ intro? You know that it would...
sorry, sorry.

If anybody knows of six other versions with which to fill up side 2, I'll happily add them...

Wow. There are a lot of versions here that I'd love to get a hold of, like the Beastie Boys with Miho Hatori (that's the great Japanese chick from Cibo Matto). This is very thorough and a good conversation piece. Nice work!

There are two other versions on Capitol's Ultra-Lounge series, an instrumental by "Zachariah" and one by someone named John Andrew Tartaglia. You can list them here...as long as I don't have to listen to the mix in one sitting ;-P
