Comment:

Slowdive- Cello: This Ambient/Dream song starts off the mix in a thick, hopelessly depressive note. This short track sets the mood for the progression of depressive tracks to follow.

Beethoven- Moonlight Sonata: Being instrumental, Moonlight Sonata is an excellent follow-up to Cello. It's simplicity somehow oozes helplessness. The melodramatic piano suggests tortured loneliness, an obvious theme of this mix.

The Smiths- Asleep: Talk about suicidally depressing, this song is also simple, yet it introduces vocals with its piano accompaniment. It also inspired the title and embodies all that this depressing theme is.

Tori Amos- Enjoy the Silence: Tori's version of this song turns a popular romantic 80's pop hit into something that makes you want to cry. Her voice sounds afraid, dependent, and alone.. as if she is looking back on someone she lost.

The Cure- Apart: The most painful song for failed relationships is a perfect follow-up to Enjoy the Silence. This song introduces some more instruments while keeping it slow.

Nick Cave- The Weeping Song: The title does not lie. With dramatic piano and Cave's I've-hit-rock-bottom voice, this song puts something stronger than angst into depression.

Peter Gabriel- Love to be Loved: This song, as with most Peter Gabriel songs, is a journey. It differs from the rest in the fact that it ends on a good note, giving listeners the first hint of hope. It stirs up more emotions and becomes the emotional peak of the tape.

Nick Cave- Fifteen Feet: A bit more intense than Weeping Song, this track really delivers the angst. It is also a journey, but prepares listeners to come down a little.

Elvis Costello- I want You:This song slows things down but hits you with that desperation you hear in Cave's voice. This is great (or just really bad) for break-ups.

Fiona Apple- Never is a Promise: This song is a little different, not so angsty. It has that simple piano sound that ties the tape together, yet it is not leaving you totally suicidal.

Radiohead- Exit Theme: A quiet ending, again something simple, something really depressing. Everyone loves the last song to end with the lyrics "We hope that you choke." What can I say, it is an exit theme, and actually THE exit theme to Baz luhrmans Romeo and Juliet, a perfect song to end with.
