Comment:

This was inspired largely by Rob Conroy's single artist "best 80 minutes" mixes. I found the idea intriguing and decided to give it a shot with a band that I've recently rediscovered, The Doors. I have to say, though, I'm not too happy with my results. First of all, in recent years, I've adopted the "non-chronological" method for most mixes I make, as I think it's simply more fun that way (and more of a challenge). Secondly, I found myself having to leave off way more material than I wanted, which could have been rectified had I made this a two disc set. What I'm thinking of doing is expanding this to two discs, possibly mixing things up time-wise, adding the obligatory hits I omitted here ("Light My Fire," "Hello, I Love You," "The Unknown Soldier," "Five To One," "Touch Me," "Roadhouse Blues," "L.A. Woman"), their two magnum opi ("The End," "When The Music's Over") and lastly (and I know you're gonna hate me for this, Rob), "Celebration Of The Lizard," in all its glory, from the "Absolutely Live" album. That should fill two discs quite nicely and would make a much more well rounded and satisfying two disc retrospective, IMHO. But for now, this disc is a pretty accurate listing of my personal favorite Doors tunes. I had thought that I'd grown out of my fondness for "Strange Days," but in making this compilation, I found there was little I could bear leaving off from that record. And yes, I make no apologies for my inclusion of the sound collage "Horse Latitudes," which I still find creepy and cool to this day. :-)

I'm clearly not going to hate you for including anything that you'd like on your mixes, Chris. heh Actually, you included almost every tune that I did on *my* Doors mix ("Another flashing chance at bliss") ... the only song that I'm really missing here is "Indian Summer", which is a huge favorite of mine, inasmuch as *any* Doors song is a favorite. (I can't say I share your enthusiasm for them.)

One of the most overrated (and incredibly boring) bands ever. And Jim Morrison obviously was a moron. No hard gfeelings, though. I do enjoy the Doors from time to time, in homoeopathic doses.

A couple'a things. One, I've been hearing a lot of criticism and backlash against the Doors in recent years. It's interesting to me, though, that many of the arguments against the Doors could also be used against a band like, say, Nirvana. And yet I don't hear Nirvana getting slammed nearly as much. Two, the Doors might be overrated, but wouldn't a "band" like, say, The Backstreet Boys fit the "most overrated of all time" tag a bit better? Third, it seems fashionable for critics to favor the other seminal '60s L.A. band, Love, over The Doors now. While I enjoy Love a great deal and find "Forever Changes" to be a masterwork, I don't find Arthur Lee's acid-induced hodge podge lyrics much more coherent than Morrison's. Last, I don't enjoy The Doors *nearly* as much as I did in my teens, but some of the arguments being used against them these days are just as ludicrous as the ones from fans who are ardently *for* them.
