Surprisingly tasteful selection, all things considered. You could do a pretty hefty box set using the Dead Rock 'n' Rollers theme (starting, of course, with the song of that title by NJ punk band Detention). Given the number of tragic deaths in the rock pantheon, hard to make any alternate choices without going overboard, but I suppose Joy Division would be my top pick. If you want a pretty lengthy list, check out http://www.av1611.org/rockdead.html -- it's a website by some nutty fundamentalists aimed at showing how rock music is Satan's work, but they actually do a good job of listing dead rock stars (along with cause of death).
I KNEW it. as soon as I did this I'd remember others; I forgot all about Chris Bell. I can't believe it. And that website is kinda disturbing; they had everyone I could ever think of, plus a bunch of people I didn't know. But it is an interesting read. I didn't even realize Nico was dead.
Sad stories, but timelesss tunes. I think Gene Clark is my new favorite tragic Byrd. TVP's Dan Treacy could be a contender for vol. II.
Dan Treacy's dead?
No one's sure. He's alleged to be missing.
Nice selections.
ahem. maurice gibb anyone?
Very good mix. Very scary website, do people still believe that "Rock n'Roll is the devil's music" crap???
nice theme & nice mix
I hadn't heard that about Dan Treacy either; I've been meaning to get into TVP for a while, but this collegiate budget really tightens the pursestrings when it comes to new music. I hear good things though.
Oh, and I'll make two comments of my own in a row: I had every intention of including "Let It Blurt" but have misplaced the mix with that track on it. So I didn't. There's more than enough for a volume II though, if I ever track it down.
great stuff. looking forward to seeing vol II.
Not sure how I missed, but, congratulations on mix of the week and a fantastic mix.
One thing: "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" is Leadbelly, not Robert Johnson, so you could have used "Me and the Devil Blues" without there being two RJ picks.
You're right, of course. I'm not sure what I was thinking. Thanks for pointing it out.
Congratulations! Great choices for a rather sad topic. (I was out of town, that's why I missed it forst time 'round.) Thanks DJ Holland, great choice.
Outstanding! Another one I missed the first time around. Should have received mix of the week for the liner notes alone.
Great work. One that just came to my mind that I didn't see on that "rock is of the devil" website was the drummer from Feeder. I can't think of his name right now. But didn't he kill himself like two years ago?
congratulations! this is a great mix!!!
Congratulations! A great choice for Mix of the Week.
Whoa, Adam. This is great. Very nice. How did I miss this?
Amazing! you mentioned a vol. II - if you haven't heard them before check out Brainiac. Lead singer died in car crash a few years ago.
Thanks for all the kind comments. There is definitely a volume two in the works; I've got a lot of ideas about what would work on it and Brainiac is among the groups on the master list. There are just so many. Oh, and I posted this on a Friday afternoon, a rather odd time, so if you missed it the first go-round, that would probably be why. Thanks again.
For the 2nd go-around I'd suggest Stuart Adamson from Big Country who hung himself a bit over a year ago.
If Big Country didn't completely suck, I'm sure he would. And the word is "hanged", dude.
what about that freaky dude from INXS? Auto-ertoic asphyxiation baby.
Actually, "Pete" or whoever you are, as hung is the past tense of hang it is the correct use of the word.
heres another one for you - one of the singers of stereolab died a month or so back in a cycling accident (or so mojo says). thats sad, as i saw them live two summers ago. first time an artist i saw perform has died. she was 38 i believe :(
Actually, "DJ", despite the fact that "hung" is indeed the past tense of hang, "hanged" applies when a person ties a noose around his/her neck. Feel free to look it up.
Crotch-grabbingly good!
As I said on vol.2.......It's really sad about the Buckley's heroin problems, is it correct that they drowned in the same river?
Mike, I know that Jeff drowned in the Mississippi, but I believe Tim died of a heroin overdose. Their's really is a sad story. Incidentally, I heard rumors a while back that a movie is in the works about their lives, entitled "Dream Brothers", but I haven't heard anything recently on that front.
awesome once again. So many great and lasting songs and talents here. sigh (fights back the tears). Nice work.
This is well done!
Brian Wilson is still alive--perhaps you meant Carl or Dennis Wilson?
