OK, I tried to do this once before, but got overly excited and ended up having a lot of filler. I've done it right this time. There are still a lot of great bands missing, but hey, I could only pick 25. Anyhow, I feel the need to quickly run through the different sections of the mix.
Tracks 1-6- These opening six highlight the 60s garage movement in Minnesota. Not all of the bands are from Minneapolis, specifically, so the title is misleading, but I don't care. And I have nothing else to say. We're off to a smashing start with these notes... Thanks to Jana for a couple of the tracks.

Tracks 7-9- This is the dance movement, for lack of a better description. Incidentally, Prince lives less than a mile from me, so I get to hear all sorts of crazy Prince stories. Did You Know...Prince has his own special button on the register at Hollywood Video so he doesn't have to say his phone number out loud? That amused me. Moving on...

Tracks 10-13- The first two should be obvious enough. The latter two are an example of the Minneapolis punk movement a couple years after the fact, and done by women. Truthfully, the Soviettes sound more like Sleater-Kinney, but I can pretend.

Tracks 14-17 This is power pop, in a general sense, with some punk influences mixed in. And the Trip Shakespeare track is just plain weird. But good. Brainerd is in Northern MN, for those wondering. Thanks to lo-fi for the Magnolias track.

Golden Smog- Jennifer, Save Me- Sure, Golden Smog's most famous member isn't from Minneapolis, nor is their sometimes drummer Jody Stephens. But everyone else(including other drummer, Chris Mars) comes from various Minneapolis bands, so I've justified it. And in most reviews they are referred to as "Minneapolis super-group Golden Smog", which made it easier. And by using this group, I can leave off the Jayhawks, Honeydogs, and Run, Westy, Run. And it's a beautiful song, to boot. AndAndAnd. What a terribly written paragraph.

Tracks 19-23 "The Longhorn Days" is a tribute to Jay's Longhorn Bar, which was the first real punk venue in town. It was home to shows by Richard Hell, the Talking Heads and the Only Ones(the latter is even referenced in the song). Plus he refers to Uncle Sam's(now First Ave.), so I obviously had to include it. Haley Bonar is from Duluth, but I've already said that I don't care. And I have a Har Mar Superstar story, but it's not that great, and I need to wrap this up soon.
Lifter Puller- The Bears- It's Lifter Puller. No more explanation needed.

Atmosphere- Shh!- Who would have thought a rapper would be the one to perfectly summarize why natives love Minnesota so dearly. What's really cool is how Slug takes his love of his hometown, and encourages others to find out what they love about the place they live. Though it starts out as a song about Minneapolis, it ends up representing the whole Midwest, and anywhere across the world that isn't "cool", like NY or LA. It's actually quite uplifting. And that's always nice.


OK, I just need to mention a few bands that were cut at the very last second, due to time constraints: Dillinger 4, Curtiss A, Hindu Rodeo(that one really hurt), The Cows, the Suicide Commandos, Boiled in Lead, Mason Jennings, Magnatone, the Selby Tigers, and Low.


Oh, and that Zimmerman guy, too.
