This is the toned-down version of a mix I had tried to make a couple of months ago exploring the concept of active listening to popular music: I cut up a bunch of songs looking to construct the whole mix from small (<30 sec.) pieces, so the listener would need to "actively" listen for the thematic/background characteristic of the sound rather than the sound itself. In other words, the disparate pieces would sound both musically and thematically more solid than they would operating as, say, 23 whole songs linked simply by the so-called "aural smoothness" in moving from one song to the next.
That was the idea. In practice, I decided to take 23 of the more mainstream songs on my original list and try to link them both by that smoothness but also by their background characteristics, in the hope that enough links between the different songs would show up.
