Comment:
Inspired by the mixes of Nate Patrin and Jeffrey1, I've decided to embark on a series of "year mixes," beginning with 1965, the year of my birth. My mixes are going to try to be a little bit rock, a little bit pop, a little bit soul, a little bit country and a little bit whatever else was going on that year. However, I'm not exactly going to be linear in how I make them: I'm going to make sets of four, each one in the set 10 years away from the previous. So, this set, when completed, will be 1965, 1975, 1985 and 1995. The next set will be '66,'76,'86,'96, and so on. Doing 1965 was a little bit of an academic exercise, since I was all of six months old by the end of that year (whereas 1975 will be a much more personal mix, since I remember hearing many songs from that year when they were hits on a.m. radio). What I think is truly impressive about '65 is that the songs on this CD were probably some of the best songs, artistically, of the year AND were among the biggest sellers. Nearly every song on this disc was a Top 40 hit and those that were not probably should have been. This doesn't happen often, that the best songs are also the most popular, so I think it's important to acknowledge when that happens. I made one change after I originally made this mix. I realized that I had neglected to put "King Of The Road" on this mix. Since I consider that a pretty damn essential song, I gave Dino, Desi and Billy the boot in favor of ole Rog. I may write more about these mixes on my website (http://marimbadog.easyjournal.com), but so far I haven't yet. It's also important to note that I'm going to observe the "one song per artist per mix" rule--if I didn't this mix would be nothing but the Beatles, Stones, Supremes, Dylan and the Beach Boys!Feedback:
Great idea. Really looking forward to seeing this series play out.
Nice, Rich.
Cool. Lots of nice songs here.
nice concept...looking forward to 1970 in particular.
Yeah, it was a very good year.;) Track 18 was No.1 (in the US) on the day I was born . . .
Excellent disc and concept! I've been planning on making "year discs" for ages, but I just never get around to starting it. I think I'm afraid I'll put something under one year and find out I'm off a year, and that would just bum me out too much. I hope you see the whole sh'bang through, I'll be watching and waiting for each one! Rather than pick a track - let me just say that the whole damn track listing is great! Big thumbs up!
great idea, one of my favorite years.
Essential music.
Lovely.
What a great year, really nice choices.
Nice stuff, I'll be interested in the next one (year-wise) as that was my first year.
Fantastic! Can't wait to see the rest of the series.
Fantastic mix. Are you a Gemini too? I was also born in '65 - June 2.
Wonderful slice of music history ... doesn't it make you yearn for the days when the radio was worth turning on!
