Comment:
'Perhaps within the next hundred years, science will perfect a process of thought transference from composer to listener. The composer will sit alone on the concert stage and merely THINK his idealized conception of his music. Instead of recordings of actual music sound, recordings will carry the brainwaves of the composer directly to the mind of the listener.'-Raymond Scott, 1949
=============================
Most everyone has heard Raymond Scott's music, but usually only as cartoon soundtrack, because his pieces were incessantly sampled by Carl Stalling for Looney Tunes, & then, later, more self-consciously by Ren & Stimpy, the Simpsons, etc. -- & at this point I'm not sure it's possible to listen to his music without triggering a cartoon sequence in your mind's eye.
Scott's music is animated, all right, but he never had cartoons in mind - he invented his own eccentric style as a jazzed-up alternative to swing music. Contemporaries called the music 'silly,' 'screwy,' and 'smart-alec' 'kittenish, pseudo-jazz' -- but Igor Stravinsky and Jascha Heifetz were big fans. In a later phase of his career, Scott pioneered electronica, but this sampler is devoted to his earlier stuff using human performers.
(By the way, 'zzymzzy' is how a columnist described Scott's stuff -- because 'zzymzzy' is 'the last word'.)

Feedback:
Seriously screwy music. I love Raymond Scott's music and am particularly fond of the Beau Hunks versions.
i love him!
I have to have this at some point. It looks seriously wacky and right up my street. Great work once again.
Magnificent! I'm not sure what I'd conjure up in my mind's eye.....,but I'd watch!
This is totally great. I love the Don Byron takes on him also. I'm a big, big fan of this comp.
Hey, Joey, m'man -- if you're up for another trade, I'd be mighty eager to offer anything of mine for one of these.
WHAT??? Someone did a Raymond Scott tribute and I missed it??? Dude, you have no idea how much I adore Raymond Scott.
