Comment:
1985 was an incredible year for music--I had forgotten, or my memory had been warped by too much Phil Collins and "We Are The World." My apolgies to the following, who were left off (I think I'm going to make a mix covering what I missed in the 65-75-85-95 mixes): Simple Minds,Wham!,Ready For The World,A-Ha,ABC,Arcadia,Artists United Against Aparthied,Ashford and Simpson,Pete Townshend,Jagger/Bowie,Run-DMC,LL Cool J,Mick Jagger,John Mellencamp,Tom Petty,Bob Dylan,Minutemen,Tears for Fears,The Firm (sorry, but I really kinda liked "Radioactive"),John Fogerty,Grace Jones,Robyn Hitchcock,Aretha Franklin,Elliot Easton,Blasters, the Smiths,Scritti Politti, and more, I'm sure. Aside from the recorded music, probably the highlight of 1985 for me was being at the Philadelphia portion of Live Aid (you can find my memories of Live Aid in the archives section of one of my websites: http://www.angelfire.com/journal/ddog). So this mix is trying to tell a couple of different stories-the emergence of what was then called "college rock," the continuing rise of rap, aging rockers trying odd new ideas, and some pretty decent Top 40 fodder. None of those tales are completely told here, but you'll find a little bit of all of them. Oh, and this wasn't really intentional, but the mix begins and ends with "new wave" guys being sort of jazzy.Feedback:
Great mix again! This is around the time I started in college radio and my access to music multiplied tenfold (fifty-fold?). I remember playing all of this (and buying most of it too) and you're right, this was a great year for music! And yeah, I really like "Radioactive" too, but would feel compelled to apologize for The Firm.
Great, great stuff. I was a junior in high school back in '85 and I listened to a lot of this. I especially love the Replacements->Hoodoo Gurus. Fantastic mix.
I was just starting college around this time, so this really brings me back. I too was buying records by REM, the Replacements, Prefab Sprout, Doug E. Fresh and Husker Du. Excellent mix daddy-o.
Ouch. Too many drunken high school memories coming back. Still, fine collection of some the year's best. Especially nice to see Camper Van and TSC get a nod here.
