Comment:
For my Feb 2003 Indiepop Swap partner. Hope she likes it. I sure do. The mix touches on a number of different styles in the first four tracks before settling down. From nighttime torchy twang to 60's spy jazz to alt-country-pop and on to showtune alternative). I purposely didn't use any tracks off of Divine Comedy's best-of "Secret History" because I'm hoping the recipient will pick that up and didn't want to dupe tracks she would then already have. "Secret History" is a great intro to The Divine Comedy. Following that is one of my favorite Lambchop tunes...very uptempo...has a drony outtro which leads well into Strawberry Wine, an early poppier track by shoegazer poster children My Bloody Valentine. I don't know why, but the source for this track is mastered incredibly bright and tinny and needed major EQing to make it sound like it halfway belonged with the rest of the tracks. Next up is a great track by East Village. Paul Kelly (later of Birdie) really knew how to write a jangly melodic alt-pop tune. Lots of other good stuff in the mix...particularly "Blonde on Blonde" by Nada Surf. The Electric Soft Parade track is abbreviated, otherwise it would have been eight minutes. Works just as well since it's essentially a 3 minute pop song that leads into 5 minutes of ambience, but the original works great in the context of the album it came from. Why this album has not been released yet in the US is a huge mystery. It's quite good. The Shins tracks is the closer, and has a nice ending mood. There may or may not be a hidden bonus track.Feedback:
Another good one!
Yeah, a good collection.
I agree with my two previous friends. Nice liner notes too! Love those early tinny MBV songs.
