I know the notes are a bit indulgent. Please forgive me.

Wow! Just saw this at the top of the recent 100 list. Another fantastic mix, with superb liner notes. Perhaps an all-dead drummer mix could be a future theme. BTW, your stuff is going out tomorrow.

The music more than compensates :) Looks excellent, and always nice to see "I Am The Cosmos"...

Adam, you've managed to out-do yourself yet again. I can't wait for catch up time during spring break.

This is great Adam, but I have to mention that Dennis Wilson drowned. Carl died of a brain tumor, if I remember correctly, and both created beautiful music.

Another amazing collection! The first time I remember hearing about Phil Ochs (when I was a young-ish teenager) was in reading a "Fate" magazine article about how his ghost was supposedly haunting some coffeehouse.

Aww, you got me all excited when I saw Evan Dando listed in the mix... oh well... godspeed to him...

Jana is of course right; Dennis is the one who drowned, Carl had cancer, and I got them mixed up. And since my thanks to lo-fi for the TVP track are buried up in the notes, I thought I may as well include a slightly more visible "thanks" here. And thanks to all of you for all the kind comments.

Adam, this is lovely. I hope more artists die so that you may make countless more volumes of this series. No, I don't, but the mix is good nonetheless.

Oh, I'm quite surprised. Well, thanks for the honor, and thanks for all the comments. And yes, Ion, volume one also received the honor. There's something about these people and these stories that resonates with a lot of people, I think...all that wasted talent.

Congratulations, Adam. A nice mix. I can't agree at all with your fondness for Eva Cassidy, in general (although calling her the "female Jeff Buckley" isn't far off: a sort of boring but mildly talented artist who is now overwhelmingly overrated due to an untimely death); as far as her version of "Dark End" being the definitive version of the song... I'm flabbergasted... I mean, have you heard James Carr's original or the Richard & Linda Thompson version?! I even prefer the version in The Commitments... I dunno. All of this is said in a good-natured manner, honestly, but I am totally at odds with your opinion on that one.

Oh, no, Rob. Don't misunderstand me, please. I said that I "have heard this called the definitive version", which I read in some retrospective article about her life. I agree with you that it isn't the definitive version, but my point (feel free to agree or disagree) was that for someone to have the nerve to make that statement, with the abundance of other great versions, makes a remarkable statement. That someone could think that it was the definitive version is quite a statement about her performance. A slightly ridiculous statement, yes, but a statement nonetheless. I apologize, I didn't do a very good job of conveying that meaning in the notes. Personally, I say the best version is James Carr's and am actually working on a mix of songs that have defined my musical tastes, and my musical life, if you will, and James Carr's version of the songs is on there; Eva Cassidy's, needless to say, is not.

Oops, sorry I misread you. You're right... that *is* some statement indeed. (See my comments below.) :-) Yeah, I think the James Carr version is one of the definitive songs of my life, as well. I just nominated it for "Greatest Soul Single of All-Time" in a coversation the other day (and that's saying something, particularly when "I'll Take Care of You" by Bobby Bland, "That's How Strong My Love Is" by Otis Redding, and "Big Byrd" by Eddie Floyd exist).

"Big Bird", I mean. lol I have no idea where my head is right now, but it certainly wasn't guiding my hands on the keyboard.

Brainiac may have been on the verge of more widespread success, with writeups in Rolling Stone and such, right before Timmy's death. A real tragedy, one of my all-time favorite bands. For any who don't know, Brainiac's guitarist John Schmersal went on to form Enon.

I've been meaning to comment on this one for a while, Adam. Looks really great, as does all of your stuff. Congrats on MOTW for the 2nd time! Good stuff, man. At some point in the next month or so, (after some shit cools out in my increasingly hectic schedule and I get caught up on some other trades) we should set up a trade.
