Comment:

This is something I made for Naomi, as a thank-you for always lending me her car, an Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight. Hence the title, which is a rather poor reference to Dylan's tune. The idea was to make a mix that would be good for driving back to Cleveland, so I tried to make it as fun as I could, and also tried to include some stuff she might know, hence Pavement, that particular Soft Boys track, etc. Then I threw in a bunch of Stiff stuff because that's what I've been listening to lately, and it's almost all great car music. And then she hadn't heard this song that had her name in it, so I snuck it in at the end, where it actually sounds kinda nice after "Itchycoo Park". Many thanks to Messrs. Lally and Lo-fi jr. for tracks 1 and 10, respectively. I'm not sure if that is the correct punctuation for what I'm trying to say.

Intriguing mix. "Bitchin' Camaro," "Where the Hell is Bill," and "I'll Buy" were all defining moments in my '85 college radio heyday, and look nice amongst the other random classics you've got here. "Naomi" is a great song. My only qualm is putting "Oklahoma USA" on a car mix -- great song, but I use it on my sleep mixes, and would be nervous about sliding off the road.

Yeah, Oklahoma, U.S.A. is a beautiful song(both this version and the original), and I agree that it's a perfect sleeping song. For some reason though, for me it also conjures up the feeling of a quiet summer evening, so I thought it might fit in nicely at the end, amongst some of the lower-key songs on the mix. Kind of a "the end of the trip is near" feeling, after all that peppiness. Speaking of which, I think I need to go listen to Fakebook. That got me in the mood.

Suckers to the side, you know you hate my eighty-eight! (misheard Public Enemy lyric). Looks like one sweet mix my friend. You can borrow my car anytime, although I'm not sure you'd want to!

Did you use the car to take Bill mod-ska dancing or to see the Circle Jerks? Great mix.

Oh my GOD, Tenpole Tudor! I remember seeing that video on MTV waaaaay back when, and it became an inside joke for us for years. I'd forgotten all about that song!
