Comment:
Part clean-the-computer mix, part story of the year I was 27. A friend once dubbed 27 "the dangerous year," partly because so many rock stars have died then. Lots of songs about drugs, stagnation, and poverty.1. One of the first movies I saw upon return to the states; a hilarious reminder that US culture isn't all bad. This bit is funny every time.
2. I was a little low all year...
3. ...and getting screwed, like Aimee Mann in this song.
4. But Spongebob often made it better.
5. This singer, too, has friends who wonders why he's so worried about making rent."Guess you've never seen what I'd go home to if I had to move back in."
6. I like free stuff. They Might Be Giants, Suzanne Vega, and Patti Smith free concert. Awesome. Would have been awesome even if Robert hadn't gotten us so drunk.
7. What's my scene? Seriously. What is it?
8. Not free, but cheap, and one of the few truly bizarre cultural events in Boston this year: the Eno cover band. Don't be afraid to dance.
9. "Give me a sense of purpose, a real sense of purpose now."
10. Our landlord is SUCH a dick.
11. I dealt with many job rejections by singing, "Is my writing too bootylicious for ya, babe?"
12. Screw "Dirty Water." This is the Boston song. This and "I Want My City Back" by the Bosstones.
13. The Cambridge Common has a red devil sculpture over the bar, and the slightly misquoted line, "Let's have another round for the bright red devil that keeps us in this tourist town."
14. Karma police, arrest this year. "I've given all I can, it's not enough."
15. Mental illness and wandering. Yay.
16. I quit caffeine for a while this year. Bad idea. Good idea. I don't know. Didn't last.
17. Bombastic, but accurate. "Try to make ends meet, you're a slave to money, then you die." "I'm a million different people from one day to the next."
18. I'm not that into MSP, but the more I learn about the mythos, the more I really feel for that poor fuck. "Gravity keeps my head down, or is it maybe shame" was so good it made me cry the first time I heard it.
19. Robert's theme song. Should perhaps be everyone's.
20. I've been hanginaround this old town for way too long...
