Comment:

Lee Ranaldo was/is a guitarist from Sonic Youth. Not Thurston Moore (the other guitarist) who was responsible for the more Pop-py, catchy stuff, but the one responsible for the crazy, textured, organic sonic assault which was present in many of their songs. This CD is a compilation of his solo stuff: soundscapes comprised almost solely of guitar distortion and feedback (with some spoken word here and there). Not the sort of music where you listen to the notes and the melodies, but rather where you listen to the infinitely intricate and warmly organic sounds that make up those notes. I hate these terms, but you could describe the music as "experimental" or "avant garde". Less 'music' than simply 'sound'; beautifully, purposefully, and meticulously manipulated sound. And what could be more musical than that? It's as good to really concentrate on and 'bury your ears into' as it is to have as background music, 'texturing' your conciousness, so to speak.

I'm not so familiar with Lee's solo work, but I like many of his songs with the band. I wouldn't say he's necessarily less catchy than Thurston -- songs like "Pipeline," "Mote," and "Genetic" have some pretty great hooks -- though, granted, he hasn't penned the best known "pop" tracks by the band.
