Comment:

What, you ask, is my take on the Ryan Adams debate? Funny you should ask. My stance is that Ryan is, and always has been a wildly inconsistent songwriter, though as he matures he is getting more and more steady. He started Whiskeytown when he was 20 though, maybe even 19; I don't remember for certain. Anyhow, the point is that his Whiskeytown days were ever more inconsistent, I believe, than his solo days. Of course he is still a great songwriter, so there is plenty of good stuff to be found on the band's albums. Some people will likely note that I left off some certain songs from "Pneumonia" that they may have put on...I just decided not to focus on that aspect of the band. Sorry. The two that I didn't really want to cut were the opening two from "Stranger's Almanac", but that's their best album(in my opinion, yet again) and I like trying to pull stuff from their less heard discs. So we've got some rarities here. Almost half is unreleased stuff and things that appeared on various compilations. Anyhow, feel free to weigh in, Ryan Adams vs. Whiskeytown. Title from "Angels are Messengers..."(RFD version, not the one entitled "Faithless Street" though they are essentially the same song).

Very nice mix Adam. My personal opinion on the debate at hand is that Whiskeytown was awesome, but sometimes sketchy. He peaked at Heartbreaker and Gold was decent, but really solid at the same time. His unreleased stuff is fantastic, as made so eloquently evident by your own Ryan mix. I can't see really another side to this argument actually, his solo career is definitely where it's at.

Great mix, Adam. I would fall in on the Whiskeytown side of the debate. I've always been a much bigger fan of that stuff, especially the original "Faithless Street" CD. big album for me for about a year.

I'm with Shawn. "So I started this damn country band/'Cause punk rock is too hard to sing" is just a great line.

I truly believe that his rock and roll life style and stupid surly attitude will cost him big time. He thinks he's a big star but the reality is that all he does is turn people away by being such a prick. He also tries so hard to do so many things and write so many different types of songs that I think he's forgotten about the craft of songwriting and instead has simply turned to churning stuff out. Of course the crap he churns out is still decent, it just could be much much better in my opinion. So yeah, back to the question at hand, definitely Whiskeytown over Ryan 'I'll die when I'm young' Adams, self declared rock star.

I like him, period. He seems like an ass, but I think his songwriting is pretty consistent, overall. And I prefer his solo stuff (particularly Heartbreaker, which is one of my favorite albums of the past few years) to Whiskeytown.

Yep, great stuff. I'm curious why you left off "16 days" or "Excuse me...". Sure, they were the hits, but they're really great songs, don'cha think?

Sean, I desperately wish I could have fit both "Inn Town" and "Excuse Me..." in somewhere, because I think they are both great songs, especially the latter, with Alejandro Escovedo's contribution. I just decided to go with the slightly lesser heard stuff. I do wish I could have fit those two though. "16 Days" I'm not as fond of. It's a fine song, but there are a handful on that album that I prefer. I was really surprised that song became the biggest hit on the record.

Yeah, "Inn Town" is my favorite Whiskeytown song. I forgot to lament that it wasn't here... but then again, it's your mix, so I probably wouldn't have said anything.

You haven't posted one in over a month; ease the hell up. Actually, my computer was broken until yesterday, which makes it rather difficult to do much of anything of that sort.
