Comment:
I am so sick of these stupid seventeen-year-olds calling things emo without any concept of the word. Emo is, believe it or not, an actual musical genre; the name is derived from a particular type of arpeggiated chord originating with Fugazi and Husker Du and mined by dozens of bands you've never heard of, because they released one 7" and then broke up. If any of the dumb kids listening to so-called "emo" these days heard actual emo, they would HATE it. (NOTE: Tracks 1-5 are EMOCORE, or pre-emo; tracks 6-11 are EMO; and tracks 12-20 are POST-EMO INDIE.)
Feedback:
the juliana theory and reggie are emo? (okay, "post-emo indie", my bad). in that case, count me out. i also find it hard to compare sleepytime trio to mineral. it sounds like you've been reading "what the *heck* is emo, anyway?" way too much. i do have to admit, however, that there is some pretty good stuff on here.
(minus the juliana theory and reggie, anyway).
admittedly, i made this mix for my younger brother (the 17-year-old in question) and so i relented in the end and tried to finish it off with something he could relate to... this isn't really meant to be a hardcore emo compilation for actual fans of real emo, more of a transition mix...
(and, for the record, i haven't read "what the heck is emo, anyway?"... what is that?)

woa, calm down...music is music.
yeah, true... and wrong is wrong. I just don't like inaccuracy, that's all. No offense meant. =P
fuck labels.
http://www.fourfa.com (and pardon me, the asterisks are actually on the "is" and not the "heck").
jerereremy: oh... interesting. i saw some of this quoted on another couple of websites (or rather, a website and a mailing list, to be exact.) i've never actually seen the site, though.
jeff hayward: are you saying fuck labels because you want to arbitrarily use them incorrectly, or because you really don't believe in them? if it's the former, i say fuck inaccuracy, and if it's the latter, then good for you.
the whole point of this is not that i love emo, but that i hate it when the majority of people are wrong. this isn't supposed to be definitive, it's meant to show the ignorant people who bandy around the label "emo" that there's more out there than they think. if you don't like labels, great. why are you looking up emo mixes then? because last time i looked, emo seems to be about the biggest label there is right now in indie music.

I was gonna post the fourfa.com thing, but oh well. ambitious, coyote23. ambitious. I'm waiting for the Nuggets-like 'emo' box set to come out in a decade or so. I love this mix, yr intentions, and yr categories.
I always thought that emo was essentially the same thing as power pop, and that whole "Emo" tag started with the critics.
Fuck labels, this mix sounds fuckin' awesome regardless of what you wanna call it- and Im thrilled that someone else considers Husker Du's later stuff to be the true roots of emo...in my opinion emo reached its peak, at least songwriting wise, with New Day Rising, which has the most "emotional" lyrics Ive heard yet, listen to "59 Times the Pain" or "I Apologize"- Sunny Day or Dashboard or whoever's got nothing on that shit. There's my two cents.
