Comment:

It's necessary to know the context of this mix: my roomate and I whipped it up for a specific event, CRITICAL MASS. This is when a bunch of us bicycle ridin' folk gather in the center of the city (in this case Portland, Maine) and turn the roads into a big bike path. The object, aside from just generally having fun, is to loosen up the social atmosphere, spread political messages (in this case the war was a hot topic) and, for some of us, get revenge on the cars who usually nearly kill us and push us to the sides of the streets every day (though I personally like to cheer people up, not piss them off). Anyway, we recently found that Critical Mass is a lot more fun and inspiring when there is musical accompaniment. So we hit the street today with a boom box backpack that actually blares quite loud and clear, and sounds especially nice bouncing off the walls of the cit-y. For this mix, which was put together deep into the night last night and finished up right up to the last minute this afternoon, was designed for mass appeal. And fun. How can you get angry at a large group of bicyclists dance-ridin' down the street to "I Think We're Alone Now"? Only helps our efforts to spread the anti-war, anti-imperialist, anti-military industrial complex side of things when instead of holding signs and shouting @ people, you're whizzing by them on a bike blasting 80s pop music. We were VERY happy with the results, which brought a lot of smiles to peoples' faces and kept us energized for the 2 cold hours we circled the town, and the only change we might have made would have been the New Order song, which is *damn* long. Inclusion of Michael Jacksons best song and of course, Queen's "Bicycle Race", were somehow the most appropriate. The Muppet song fit right in too, and Weird Al's pop music medly set to polka (which included REM's "Losin My Religion", Metallica's "Enter Sandman" and Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby") was of course a hit. Oh, the title of the tape comes from what my friend/roomate/collaborater Dugan likes to shout to the people on the sidewalk when we pass by.
