Comment:

(6-20-03...I finally got around to updating this one a bit, as promised. It's undergone a title change, and I added "Back to Zero Now", thanks to popkulcher, and considered swapping versions of "Places That Are Gone", but I didn't. The EP version needs to be at the beginning, and I decided not to change things around that much.)
First of all, my computer was in the shop for a little over a week, so I'm a bit behind on trades. I completed all the ones that I remember and sent the discs out today. If you think I may have forgotten our trade, just fire me an email, and I'll remedy that. Now to the matter at hand...

I'm really not sure why Tommy Keene isn't loved by the masses. I feel this way about a lot of artists, but he's a case where I really don't see how it's possible. He has very catchy songs, with intelligent lyrics. Most of all, it is immensely likable. It is damn near impossible to actively dislike this guy's music. He's even had a few near hits and many people count "Songs From the Film" amongst their favorite albums, yet mainstream success eludes him. The title is from one of the greatest songs of the 80s, "Places That Are Gone" and I have to send out thanks to Harry and Mary(yes, they rhyme) for helping me track down some out of print stuff. So, thanks! Oh, one more thing...this is subject to change, as I haven't yet bought Merry-Go-Round Broke Down, nor have I found the Places That Are Gone EP, which I hear is spectacular. But those would likely be minor changes.

Great mix of an underappreciated artist. Saw him playing with Velvet Crush many years back - great sideman as well, and a lot more gracious than the guys in Velvet Crush.

I like his work, though I haven't kept up with his post-'80's output. Isn't the Places That Are Gone EP included on the Real Underground collection? You have a bunch of tracks from that collection here, unless you found them on an mp3/vinyl source. I've got the cd if you need it.

Hey, you're right, I hadn't realized that. But no, I don't have that collection; I got most of this from vinyl transfers and the re-masters they did not too long ago, which quickly vanished into the land of out-of-print. And Sean, I know he worked as the sideman for Westerberg too a few years back, and was phenomenal there as well.

This looks great Adam. Like Marc, I'm really only familiar with his early stuff. I'm a bit surprised you didn't include his underground hit "Back to Zero" (unless you didn't have it.)

Yep, Ion, that's the one tune that I know should be on here, but as far as I know the only places to get it are the compilation Marc mentioned and on the Places That Are Gone EP. And for what it's worth, his more recent stuff is quite good, though I tend to prefer the 80s stuff. He has gotten somewhat inconsistent since then, but still puts out a few power-pop gems per album that are as good as anything out there.

Hmm... interesting. I always thought Tommy was a little on the "dull" side of power pop, but if you think he's worth an 80-minute disc, my curiosity is piqued.

Mr Bristor. We'll have to arrange a "trade" of sorts for this one. How about I'll drive your sorry drunken ass to the Pizza Ranch sometime and you make me a copy? Sounds like a hell of a deal to me. And what work did he do with Westerberg?

He was the guitar player for Westerberg during his 14 Songs tour. He played when they were on SNL too, I believe, on the off-chance you saw that.

Tommoy Keene is one of those artists that I've always meant to look into but keep forgetting to do so. Great idea to make a disc of his stuff. ")
