THE MAGNETIC FIELDS - "A Beautiful Boy In An Ugly Town" (1991-1995)
Comment:
I recently completed my Magnetic Fields CD collection and decided to throw together a little sampler for the uninitiated. (Pedants might complain that my collection isn't 100% complete, as I don't own a couple of vinyl-only b-sides and the 7" single "I Don't Believe You"). This disc focuses on the pre-"69 Love Songs" period, since that album alone warranted its very own sampler (see my "25 Love Songs" disc). My preferences here should be fairly obvious (heavy on "Holiday" and "Get Lost"), and while I felt a little bad under-representing the first two albums, the songs aren't quite as strong as on later albums, and the presence of vocalist Susan Anway gives the songs a completely different vibe. I realized late in the game that I inadvertantly omitted "In My Secret Place," and I almost slid it in in place of "Jeremy" (from the first record) but I figured I already had a glut of songs from "Holiday" anyway.
Feedback:
nice
great choices.
Oh, I did want to say, however, that I'm saddened by the absence of a few favorites: "With Whom to Dance", "Josephine", "Tar-heel Boy", "Torn Green Velvet Eyes", and "Why I Cry"... but hey, that's what different mixers are for. :-)
Yeah, Rob, I noticed those were on your comp. Most of the tunes you mentioned are much less synthy than what I've chosen. I think my affinity for synths definitely played a part in which tunes I chose here.
And my general aversion to synths probably played a part in what *I* chose. ;-)
Since my original comment appears to have not gone through (*cough cough*), I'll say this: this is a fine mix, especially since I think I like (or love) just about every song that Mr. Merritt has written. If I had done a separate primer disc for 69 Love Songs, mine would look a lot like this. Some real favorites are here: "Take Ecstasy with Me", "Strange Powers", "Desert Island", "100,000 Fireflies" (although I actually prefer the Superchunk cover of that song), "Smoke and Mirrors", "Desert Island", "Long Vermont Roads" and "Famous".
