PAUL MCCARTNEY - "Maccaspan" (Disc 3: 1989-2001)
Comment:
Volume three of a three disc boxed set. See volume one for details. I feel I might have to defend my inclusion of "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" (and possibly others), but we'll see what happens. By the way, all three "Unplugged" tracks were skillfully crossfaded together by me using Goldwave. UPDATED 11-18-03 (on the eve of three Beatle-related releases): I recently acquired "Run Devil Run" and it made enough of an impression on me that I decided to include three tracks here, "Try Not To Cry," "Lonesome Town" and "Honey Hush" (the latter two featuring incredible vocals). Also threw on Paul's cover of Ian Dury's "I'm Partial To Your Abracadabra," which I came across shortly after making the first version of this disc. "Abracadabra" is easily one of the most exciting tracks Paul's released in years. Oh, "This One," "Every Night (Unplugged)" and "Driving Rain" were excised to make room.Feedback:
A fine finish.
why defend 'blue moon of KY'? it's a great song. have you heard the studio version on the sun records tribute, _good rocking tonight_?
Well, as far as having to defend anything here, I'd argue that everything from that newest album falls into the "abysmal" category that you mentioned. I also wanted to express surprise at your lack of including "Great Day" (my favorite song from Flaming Pie) and the presence of nothing from Run Devil Run.
Rob, taking your points in reverse order: as "Run Devil Run" was largely a covers album, I never bothered to pick it up (and yes, I've heard the track everyone absolutely raves about, "No Other Baby," and it did absolutely nothing for me). "Great Day" is fine in its proper place, as a closer for the "Flaming Pie" LP (easily my third or fourth favorite Macca album, ever), but definitely not a top favorite tune unto itself. As for "Driving Rain," I don't find it nearly as abyssmal as the vast majority seem to. Not great, but I'd definitely rank it above anything Macca did in the '80s (bar the "Tug Of War" LP) and maybe even one or two of the Wings era LPs (I'm thinking the god-awful "Wings At The Speed Of Sound").
