ELVIS COSTELLO - "Songs About F---ing And Fighting": Vol. 1
Comment:
An as of yet untitled Elvis Costello mix CD I made in the wee hours yesterday, in commemoration of my 26th birthday. Sort of a present to myself, as well as a challenge to see if I could do it (inspired by Spencer Owen's "Suit Of Songs" and Rob Conroy's "I Could Have Been A King In 6/8 Time" series). I'm fairly certain that, if forced at gunpoint, these are the 21 songs I'd pick as my absolute favorites of Elvis, my #1 musical hero (or "best 80 minutes"). A couple of interesting things occurred as I was choosing the songs: (1) I ended up shutting out "My Aim Is True" and "This Years Model" completely (though I had initially chosen two from MAIT and one from TYM) (2) I included more singles than I would have imagined (3) I chose quite a few tracks from "Trust," a record that I like a *lot* but wouldn't even enter into my top five Costello albums. Anyhow, there's at least another whole disc's worth of favorites that had to be omitted (probably more), and I might make further volumes if I feel the need. Then again, my opinion will probably change in a week's time and I might trash this completely. :-) C'est la vie. UPDATED JULY 16, 2005: Now that I've decided I'm making this a huge, all-encompassing box set of sorts, I've finally decided on a name. I've been wanting to make an Elvis compilation with this name for years. (I believe I heard it was an early title for the "Trust" album.) UPDATED SEPTEMBER 8, 2005: Man, it was really bugging me that the blistering solo live take of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" wasn't on here...so I took it off volume 2 and put it here. Luckily there was over 3 minutes of empty space on this disc anyway.Feedback:
...hard to go wrong with Elvis. Party Girl is
one of my all time favorite power ballads...Costello is pulling back the reins so hard on that
one; the arrangement's torque and the emotional depth propel it way past feeling like a slow song.

Love the Beatles references in that tune, especially in the coda.
Yeah, "Party Girl" is definitely one of my three or four favorite Elvis tracks (along with "Just a Memory", "Strict Time" and "Riot Act"). Faves on here: the aforementioned tracks, "You'll Never Be a Man", "Possession", "Indoor Fireworks", "Brilliant Mistake", "King Horse", "Accidents Will Happen" and "Beyond Belief". Least favorites on here: the Brodsky Quartet tracks, although they're the two best songs on that album, and "The Sweetest Punch". Everything else is very-good-to-great, although I've always thought that "Oliver's Army" kind of fell in the "overrated" category.
By the way, belated happy birthday. I turn 32 on Friday.
Thanks for the b-day wishes, Rob. I cannot explain my affinity for "The Sweetest Punch"...but there it is (I'm a sucker for some of that Bacharach stuff...some of it is personal memories). As for the Brodsky Quartet tunes...they come from two different albums ("The Juliet Letters" and "All This Useless Beauty").
I'd just be repeating the other comments if i told you which ones i liked best but this is fabulous! (ok i have to mention beyond belief, accidents will happen, indoor fireworks and hope your happy now. and what the other's said)
Elvis is the best. i love this mix.. i always love seeing other people's mixes of his work. :)
and happy birthday! :)
and happy birthday! :)
it is officially impossible to convey elvis in a mere 79 minutes. great to see 'armed forces' and especially 'blood & chocolate' so well represented. good stuff, and happy b-day.
Thanks to all for the compliments and birthday wishes. Eric: you're absolutely right. I generally shy away from single disc comps of my favorite artists...but after seeing so many here at AotM, I thought I'd give it a try and see if I could make one disc of my absolute faves. Also, "Armed Forces" is my favorite Costello album, and the generally maligned "Blood And Chocolate" is my third or fourth favorite. I have long felt that "This Years Model" was in my top three, but after this endeavor, I'm reconsidering my ranking.
DOH! Yeah, I forgot that there was at least one Brodsky track on "Beauty" (I traded that album so long ago that I don't remember the song listing, even though I have a dubbed copy of it.)
Tracks I had to cut that might make a nice volume two: "Miracle Man," "Mystery Dance (Live at El Mocambo)," "Watching The Detectives," "You Belong To Me," "Men Called Uncle," "Clowntime Is Over," "Motel Matches," "Riot Act," "Watch Your Step," "The Loved Ones," "Let Them All Talk," "Shipbuilding," "Pills And Soap," "Our Little Angel," "Suffering Face," "Uncomplicated," "London's Brilliant Parade," "When I Was Cruel No. 2."
