Comment:

Most of you can recognize why this is a single artist mix, even though I didn't actually list why. All of these are duets with Emmylou Harris. After compiling a Gram Parsons mix last week I realized that I really loved her duets, not only with Gram, but with almost everyone I've heard. So I decided I needed to put some of my favorites on one disc. I couldn't think of a title though, so I just tossed one on from the first Ryan Adams song. And yes, it was a chore not to just put 16 Gram Parsons songs on here, but there were more than enough other great duets that I didn't have to go that far. And "Hearts on Fire" was supposed to be on this mix, but my damn copy was skipping, so I slipped in "A Song For You" instead. Finally, if I'm missing one of your favorites, please let me know. It's hard to track down all her good duets, because she's done so many, and with just about everyone alive. She has a pretty damn incredible voice.

Very nice! I love Emmylou's duets. A mix of Lucinda Williams duets would be nice, too....

Beautiful. Her show a few years back is one of my all-time faves. What a voice and stage presence. She was amazing at the Land mines concert last year, too. Plus, Steve Earle and so many other greats were there! What a great idea for a mix.

Fabulous. I second all the comments. And Mo, I've toyed with a mix of Lucinda duets, but haven't done much with it. (Anybody!?!?) Between Emmylou and Lucinda, they've sung with almost as many different people as Willie Nelson!

WOW! What a *great* idea. I really, really wish I'd have thought of this. Yeah, she is by far my favorite female harmony vocalist in all of rock history. I must admit that most of her solo albums leave me a little cold...

Thanks for the comments, and I agree a Lucinda duets mix needs to be done by someone. And though there are a few Emmylou solo songs that I like, I really do agree with you Rob, she is much better as an interpreter, and mixed with another voice. I generally think her voice is perfect with a man, but the Lucinda Williams pick is SO good that I had to include it, and I slipped in the others because the barrier had already been broken. But yeah, after the Gram one I thought about doing a single artist mix for her, but realized quickly that it would all be duets, so I may as well run with that idea. Anyhow, thanks everyone for the comments. No other ones that are especially good that I'm missing though? I know she did one with Richard Thompson's son, that is supposed to be alright, but I don't have that album.

Very nicely done.

Emmylou sings on one of the "O Brother" songs. "Didn't Leave Nothin' But the Baby," or "Down to the River To Pray," with Alison Krauss and/or Gillian Welch.

Great idea, great mix. I was also always partial to Nanci Griffth duets but she can be an acquired taste. Now that I think of it Emmylou did some duets with Nanci on a couple of the Nanci Griffth albums of other people's songs. I also recall Emmylou singing with David Bromberg. Nice job. I would love to hear a Lucinda duets mix.

Marvellous. I can't think of anything left off. I didn't know Adams did 'Grievous Angel'- that's me favourite Gram & Emmylou song, that.

Yeah, it's actually a live version, but high sound quality. It's one of my favorite Gram songs too, and this version...boy, it's pretty good. Almost enough to compare it to the original, but I'm not going to do that.

And yeah, the Gillian/Alison Krauss/Emmylou song was considered, but I didn't have the room. And unless I'm mistaken she is on Dylan's "Hurricane", but that song tends to dominate a mix, and I thought it was kinda out of place here. Plus she really doesn't do much there. I wish Bob would have given her a bigger part, somewhere along the line.

I just remembered, there are a couple of good Emmylou duets on "Return of the Grievous Angel", a great Gram tribute album. She does "She" with Chrissie Hynde and "Sin City" with Beck among others.

This looks nice Adam. Makes me want to put it in the car and drive through the south. btw, I put the fallen legends in the car last weekend for a short day trip west, and they all enjoyed it mightily. I did as well.

Oh, damn, you're right, I forgot about the Gram Parsons tribute. I wasn't terribly fond of Beck's version of "Sin City", but I think I recall liking that version of "She". I'll have to find where I put the album, and see if I need to switch things up. Thanks for the heads-up.

I was checking your profile, as I do on occasion to see if you've put any mixes up recently, and this is listed as the most recent mix in your catalogue. Your profile says it was posted 2/23/2004, though clearly the top of this page says it's from 5/5/2003. Strange, huh?

I know. I noticed that yesterday. It's a problem with the database, or something. Someone else mentions the same thing happening in a message posted in the discussion forum.
