Comment:
Just a mix of enjoyably 'bad' or occasionally 'good' covers of some already great tunes. Names in parentheses are (as far as I know) the folks who made the songs famous originally. I've seen and heard much dispute over who does the cover of Gin and Juice, so feel free to correct me if you know FOR SURE. Standouts (according to my listening audience of like 2 people) are the Cake song, Cash doing 'Hurt,' and the pickin' and grinnin' version of Gin and Juice. Least loved song (by everyone but me) is Hombre Secreto. I still love that tune.Feedback:
Didn't know Weezer did a Britney Spears cover...I'm VERY intrigued. Travis did a cover of the same song, and it (somehow) really worked. Tatu doing The Smiths is sacrilege. Love the mix, by the way, especially the Ian Brown and Cake tracks!
Yes, I found the Tatu cover to be particularly ... ironic. There is no greater song than "How Soon Is Now?" by the Smiths except MAYBE "Where is My Mind?" by the Pixies. Maybe I just love songs where the title is a question...Hmm...
The Weezer cover is a live track, it seems...audience laughter in the background on occasion.
Thanks for diggin on my mix!

I'm not here to tell you that Hayseed Dixie don't cover Snoop Dogg, for I don't know about that. But I am 100% SURE that The Gourds from Austin, TX do a rippin' bluegrass cover of "Gin and Juice" that is very widely passed-around. Just this past weekend someone told me that on The Gourds website there is video footage of the guys from the band playing the song for Snoop, and his reaction...but I have yet to check that out. I dig this mix, by the way. Especially the KLF, Weezer and Reel Big Fish songs I'd like to hear. Some that are already favorites of mine include Cake (what a great version), Manson, and the Depeche song by Johnny Cash...he takes that song to a whole new level for me. Nice job. PEACE
It is The Gourds that did that cover of Gin & Juice. This mix looks great. Nice to see some out-there covers!
Excellent info on the Gin and Juice origins...I'll have to go check out the Gourds! As a fellow Texan, I'm surprised I hadn't found that out sooner. Shame on me, but thank goodness for AOTM, because now the truth can be told!!
Thx!
Thx!
Doesn't Ian Brown do Billy Jean??
uproar - not sure. I've heard the thriller cover obviously, but haven't heard Billy Jean. That would be excellent!
yup - I heard him do Billie Jean live and it kicked ass. I think he does it a lot, though.
Fountains of Wayne have a cover of Baby One More Time, too. It's a great song to play if you know guitar. I'm not sure, but I predict that in about 10 years, it might well be known as a classic. ;-) Well, maybe not quite, but any song that can sound so beautiful by Travis, and can be covered by bands like FoW and Weezer can't be all bad.
