Comment:
Who's Carol Kaye? Well, she is undeniably one of the titans in the construction and creation of some of the most gigantic pop records of the last 45 years or so (see track listings 1-20 above!). Take a look at this list and ponder how deeply ingrained these records are on the pop culture soundtracks of your life. Carol Kaye is a studio musician who played on each and every one of these records! Mostly a bassist (go listen to the first few bars of California Girls--it's not so much an assemblage of notes as it is a moment in time and spirit) but also an extremely accomplished guitarist, her imprint will long outlive all of us...I stumbled upon her in a piece on the Beach Boys, where she was praised by Brian Wilson for her amazing contributions to their recordings. I found out "the rest of the story" at her website, www.carolkaye.com, which among other things, contains a discography that will have your jaw dropping to the floor, particularly if you're over the age of 30. By the way, Ms. Kaye plays guitar on tracks 1, 3, 6, 12, 17 and 20 on this mix, while the rest of tracks feature her bass work. Has anyone else had a hand in the cultivation of popular music to this extent? If so, I can't think of who it might be...Hail, Hail Rock And Roll...Feedback:
FANTASTIC!
great mix
a damn fine idea for a mix.
I love it.... great concept! Now, let's see a documentary... I wanna know more!!
Ken, this is a wonderful tribute. I'm sorry I didn't see it earlier. She's an amazing player, and she just seems like such a nice person too. Awesome!
By the way, I'm imagine that Hal Blaine has played a similar role in music. And his own solo materials ain't bad either. Lee Hazelwood was an important figure, but he clearly faded to obscurity much earlier.
This reminds me that I want to do a "producers" series one day - Joe Meek, maybe even Phil Spector.
On some Beach Boys bio (A&E?) they interviewed a female bassist who was in on the Good Vibrations sessions. I think this is she, no?You've got some excellent looking mixes. Your 70's series has a ton of songs I loved, then and now. Up for a trade?
WOW!!!! this is an awesome mix- and informative too! :)
Great mix Ken and many thanks for the accompanying info. These days new musical trivia seems to be the only info I can retain long-term.
Carol Kaye is an awsome musician who just happens to be a woman! She is a great jazz player and that is why she gets in the groove thang!
I think you will find that in fact James Jamerson played bass on the two Motown hits that you mentioned.
Wonderful mix. I'll remember her name!
How the hell did I miss this tribute to one of the most amazing bassists of all-time? Great idea and great work.
