Comment:
I've always enjoy Tom's music, but found too much of it in the 'I'm going to go drink myself to death now' vein, so here is a compilation of my favorite tracks from his first 20 years.
Feedback:
I agree! I love all of Toms songs but I think his strength's are his story telling songs, unusual characters and settings. My favorite album is Foriegn Affairs with its routte 66-y crime jazz feel. The best period, in my opinion is all the stuff from Heart of Saturday Night to Heart Attack and Vine.
Unfortunately, just like, say, Nick Cave, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Einstnrzende Neubauten and, to a lesser extent, Laibach, Tom Waits has fallen victim to the "being embraced by the art circuit syndrome", i.e. his records have become kinda repetitive and predictable (and thus increasingly uninteresting) within the past at least 15 years. But the albums from "Closing Time" to "Foreign Affairs" and, even more so, "Blue Valentine" (my fave) show an immensely skilled songwriter and singer ('cos yes, folks, Tom can really sing, even if he's tried to prove the oppsotie for quite a while). I'd have included "Martha" which still brings tears to my yeyes whenever I hear it (sentimental ol' me. Well . . .) and "In the Neighborhood". Apart from that, this is almost immaculate.
Nice picks! I love his story songs, too.
