Comment:
Inspired, as so much is these days by one of my sons, this time the five-year-old. He asked me to put a video on for him. When I went into the family room, Soul Train was on TV. I said, "Hey, you wanna just watch Soul Train instead?" My son, who has no idea what Soul Train is, said, "I am not a fan of Soul Train." Maybe after hearing some of these tunes, he'll become one. My son's TV viewing also inspired one selection on disc 1: as I was making this CD in the family room, a week after this aforementioned incident, he was in the same room, watching Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! or something. I was trying to think of '70s R&B artists I had not yet gotten onto the first disc when a character on the show says, "We need earth, wind, and fire elements on the field." "Shining Star" was the next song I put on the disk. Incidentally, I think Bowie did "Fame" on Soul Train, but I much prefer the title track from the album "Fame," is on, "Young Americans." Luther Vandross was a collaborator with Bowie on that album. And Elton John did indeed perform "Bennie and the Jets" on Soul Train--it broke through big enough on black radio stations in the US to be released as a single (I don't think it was released as a single in Britain). Other performers on Soul Train (Don Cornelius' website lists guests from every episode in the series 30+ year history!) include Captain and Tennille (!) and Don Henley (?). I am not entirely certain that every song on these discs was performed on Soul Train, but they all could have been. If you'd like, check out my journal entry on Soul Train, which you can find at http://marimbadog.easyjournal.com . I'm going to post it now; it will be the 6/22 entry.Feedback:
:-) Time to trade again?
damn good stuff
Wow, this is awesome.
Yeah, he'll be a fan of Soul Train after he hears this mix. Nice picks!
Fantastic Rich.
Beautiful!
I can remember buying the 45 of that Heatwave track....
hot.
Hot Line and Groove Line back to back. I've died and gone to disco heaven. Great stuff. Soul Train was something I used to check out after a cartoon marathon on Saturday mornings. Don Cornelius was the man -- not the current ex-soap opera star host.
this is all good, i don't know a couple of the songs but i bet they're good too
couldve used a don henley song
get down with your bad self! Great!! Love that William DeVaughn song to death....
Rich, these were even better than expected! Thanks a million - I really dig these discs. What a stroll down amnesia lane.
