Comment:
I made a single-disc Tom Waits mix before, but as my love for him has grown and developed I've discovered that the previous mix doesn't cover enough ground; it doesn't do his body of work justice. And it doesn't have "Ruby's Arms" or "On the Nickel"(from which the title is taken). So I decided to re-do it as a two disc set (disc two should be up in the next few days. I still have a decision or two to make.) This disc focuses more on the ballads while the other one will be more of an all-encompassing type of deal. To make up for the repetitiveness of my last few single-artist mixes (everyone has a Tom or Gram one, it seems) I think I'll do Solomon Burke next. I haven't seen one of those around. We'll see if I can tear myself away from NHL '93 for Sega Genesis long enough to make one. Man, that's an awesome game.Feedback:
Nice picks. He's such an amazing artist...
But SoulCaliber for the Dreamcast is better. Anyway great Tom stuff here...
Nice selection Adam.
real nice
all favorites here. Nice .
Love Tom Waits - nighthawks at the cafe (diner?) was a staple in college. He did a solo show at UCLA, and walked onstage just holding the guitar by the neck, dragging the body on the ground. that set the tone. that set the tone for a beat evening.
GREAT. Big salute for including my two favorite Tom Waits songs, "Johnsburg, Illinois" and "Christmas Card...", plus other top picks like "I Hope that I Don't Fall...", "Time", "Tom Traubert's Blues" and "Martha" (doesn't that song make you weep?).
Yeah, I agree about all of those songs, of course. And "Martha" is just phenomenal. I don't know if you've heard Meat Loaf's cover, but it's quite interesting. Where Tom sort of plays with letting the emotion out in his vocals, Meat Loaf just blasts away in the most melodramatic manner possible. As much as I shouldn't, I find myself kind of enjoying it. It's just so damn overblown.
And yeah, Steve. "Nighthawks at the Diner" is, to me, a perfect portrayal of Tom Waits. The fact that he's absoluetly hilarious isn't realized by enough people.
Meatloaf's Martha is nothing to be ashamed of. Not at all comparable to Wait's version, but still cool none-the-less. More importantly, however, Soul Calibur isn't nearly as cool as NHL '93, though a good game as well.
Excellent mix, by the way.
