Comment:
Act I (1-5) - Germans, tired of fighting wars in Germany, head for a new land. They make homes in Mason County, Texas in the middle of the 19th Century. They are filled with hope for the future, and happy to leave violence behind them.Act II (6-10) - After establishing homes, building barns, and starting businesses, the emigrants encounter Comanche who are making a last desperate attempt to reclaim their land. The Comanche, one of the most violent tribes of the area, burn houses, barns, and public buildings. They steal horses and kidnap children. The troops at Fort Mason do their best to protect the townspeople, but they are outnumbered and often taken by surprise.
Act III (11-15) - German emigrants, already frustrated by violence, are disturbed when Civil War breaks out in the United States. Germans side with the North, while Americans side with the South. Due to the war, troops abandon Fort Mason. Comanches and Apaches take advantage of the situation, and Anglos try to protect themselves. Mistrust develops between the American citizens and the German emigrants.
Act IV (16-20) - The Mason County War, or, The Hoodoo War turns Mason County citizens against one another. A group of citizens begins to steal horses from other citizens. The crime is first pinned on the Indians, and later, on the Germans. All hell breaks lose in Mason County. Vigilantes take control of the town and the county. The Hoodoo war lasted for the better part of a decade.
Act V (21-22) - Conclusion
